About the series
The saga starts with Marty and Clark building a family after loss, then follows Missie and, later, Belinda as they make homes and careers of their own. The original eight films run from Love Comes Softly to Love Finds a Home. Two 2011 films return to Clark's earlier life with Ellen, while Love's Christmas Journey follows Ellie and Aaron in a separate holiday story. Release order is the clearest first visit through this changing cast of generations.
What to expect
These frontier dramas spend time on bereavement, faith and the practical work of making a home. The focus changes as the family grows. Missie's teaching and marriage lead into Belinda's ambition to practise medicine. Expect changes of actor as well as generation, and heavier family losses than the Christmas romances elsewhere in this directory.

Inside the series
The lead changes with the generation
Marty and Clark begin the saga. Missie then takes the lead, followed by Belinda and her medical ambitions. The titles share family history even when the central romance and actor change.
Two ways into the story
Release order introduces Clark through Marty's arrival. Starting with Begins and Everlasting Courage instead explains his earlier life with Ellen. The latter is a story-order choice, not the order audiences first saw the films.
A Christmas companion
Love's Christmas Journey follows Ellie and Aaron. It belongs to Hallmark's saga collection, but should not be placed before Marty and Clark's original story simply because it also arrived in 2011.
A few more answers
Should I watch the prequels first?
Release order is the stronger starting point if you have never seen the saga. If you prefer Clark's life in story order, begin with Love Begins and Love's Everlasting Courage, then watch Love Comes Softly and the remaining main films.
Are all three 2011 films set before Love Comes Softly?
No. Love Begins and Love's Everlasting Courage return to young Clark and Ellen. Love's Christmas Journey follows Ellie and her brother Aaron in a separate Christmas story; it is not a third origin story for Clark.
Does the same cast appear throughout?
No. The films change their focus from Marty and Clark to Missie and Belinda, and some characters also change actors. Dale Midkiff plays Clark in the main saga; Wes Brown plays his younger self in the two prequels.
