    Full story (spoilers)
Clark Davis is fighting to keep his family farm alive during a punishing drought, but the land is dry, the wells are failing, and the bank is threatening to seize the property because he has fallen behind on his loan. Ellen, his wife, wants to help the family survive, so she takes a seamstress job in town and also works as a midwife when needed, even though Clark is uneasy about her working outside the home. Clark's parents, Lloyd and Irene Davis, arrive and immediately become part of the struggle. Lloyd brings practical help and old-fashioned wisdom, while Irene helps with the household and bonds with Missy. At the same time, Clark's neighbor Ben Graham begins working alongside him on the water problem, and Sarah, a quiet widow who also helps in town, grows closer to Ben. The film gradually builds a sense of community as everyone shares meals, chores, and encouragement while the farm remains in danger. The central tragedy arrives when Ellen becomes feverish and collapses. Sarah, who has some medical knowledge, recognizes the symptoms of scarlet fever and urges Clark to keep Missy away from her mother. Clark tries to care for Ellen through the illness, but the disease worsens quickly. Before she dies, Ellen asks Clark to keep his heart open and to remember that love does not end with loss, leaving him devastated but trying to honor her last request. After Ellen's funeral, Clark is consumed by grief and resentment. He feels that God has taken his wife, his peace, and possibly his land, and he nearly breaks under the weight of everything that has happened. A fire in the house adds to the chaos, and Missy feels isolated when she thinks Clark would be better off without her. Clark eventually finds her after she runs away, reassures her that she belongs with him, and recommits himself to being the father she needs. As the family continues to press forward, the neighbors rally around them. Ben and Sarah finally acknowledge their love and become engaged, bringing a moment of happiness back into the household. Clark also discovers water at last, and Lloyd secretly helps protect the farm by offering part of his own land as collateral so the bank will extend the loan. In the closing moments, rain finally falls over the farm, and the family celebrates as faith, love, and perseverance bring the hard season to an end.
