Why we’d put this one on

The sequel to Love Comes Softly, and a worthy continuation of the prairie saga. The story jumps ahead to a grown Missie, played by January Jones, who is courted by a polished railroad surveyor just as a mysterious stranger named Nate arrives to help the family through her father's life-threatening accident. At a weirdness of 3 it stays a sincere frontier romance, with a period-accurate home-surgery scene that is not for the squeamish. Katherine Heigl and Dale Midkiff return to ground it. A faithful, faith-filled watch for fans of the Love Comes Softly world.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Clark and Marty Davis reflecting on their blessed life together before Clark prays for a bountiful crop. Their daughter Missie, a local schoolteacher, is introduced as an independent woman who enjoys reading literature. The story takes a dramatic turn when Clark’s leg is severely mangled in a farming accident. A mysterious stranger named Nate happens upon the scene and helps the traumatized young Aaron bring his father home. The local doctor warns that Clark may lose his leg or his life to gangrene, leaving the family in a desperate situation as the planting season begins. Nate offers to stay and work the fields in exchange for food, though he remains tight-lipped about his origins. While Nate works the farm, Missie meets Grant Thomas, a wealthy surveyor for the Continental Railroad. Grant is immediately smitten and begins courting Missie with invitations to fine dining and promises of a life free from the 'adversity' of farm labor. Meanwhile, Clark’s condition worsens as infection sets in. Nate, drawing on his experience as a ranch hand, performs a crude but successful procedure to clean the wound and save Clark’s leg. During this time, Missie and Nate develop a bond, highlighted by a lighthearted but disastrous attempt to harvest honey that results in a bee attack. As Clark recovers, he recognizes Nate as Willie Lahaye, a boy from the community who fled six years prior. Willie eventually confesses his secret: he blames himself for the death of his younger brother, Mattie, who died of exposure during a trapping trip they took together. Willie’s return was prompted by a need for redemption, though he initially struggles to face his embittered father, Zeke. The conflict reaches a head when Grant proposes to Missie, offering her a 'fairytale' life of travel and crystal. Missie rejects him, realizing that Grant views her life as something to be 'saved' from, whereas she values the strength found in overcoming hardship together. Willie reconciles with his father, Zeke, and finally accepts his identity. The film concludes with Willie proposing to Missie; they marry and set off to the West to start their own cattle ranch, fulfilling the 'enduring promise' of faith and family.
