    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Belinda Simpson traveling to Sikeston, Missouri, following the death of her husband, Drew. Accompanied by her friend and fellow doctor Annie Nelson, Belinda arrives to find a town in turmoil. Mayor Maxwell Evans explains that a mysterious illness is killing children at the local orphanage and has begun spreading to the townspeople. A local man named Ray Russell leads a faction of citizens who believe the orphans are 'no-accounts' bringing a divine plague upon the town. Belinda visits the orphanage, managed by Miss Clarence, and meets a feisty orphan named Lillian. After observing the symptoms—extreme dehydration and fever—Belinda identifies the illness as cholera, a disease of contaminated water, rather than a simple influenza. As the death toll rises, including a young orphan named Katie and a local man named John Pine, the town's fear turns to aggression. The town council threatens to evict the orphans to save the town. Belinda, struggling with her own crisis of faith after being unable to save her husband, realizes that standard oral rehydration is failing because the patients cannot keep liquids down. She and Annie research 'intravenous therapy,' a cutting-edge and experimental treatment. She enlists the help of Lee Owens, the local blacksmith, to manufacture DIY medical devices using soda bottles, rubber tubing, and custom metal stands. Lee's persistence and kindness begin to break through Belinda's emotional walls, though she remains hesitant to love again. Belinda refines the treatment by creating a specific solution of water, sugar, and salt to replace lost nutrients. However, the conflict peaks when Ray Russell attempts to burn down the orphanage in an act of vigilante 'purification.' Lee and the townspeople intervene, and Ray is arrested. Amidst the chaos, Belinda discovers the source of the outbreak: a neglected, contaminated communal well near the orphanage that has leached into the town's groundwater. By proving the illness came from the town's own infrastructure rather than the children, she silences the opposition. The new IV treatment successfully breaks the fevers of the remaining sick. In the aftermath, Belinda decides to adopt Lillian, providing the girl with the family she never had. Belinda finally accepts Lee's marriage proposal, reconciling her medical calling with her restored faith in God's plan. The film concludes with their wedding and a letter from Belinda's mother welcoming their new family.
