    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist's backstory involves her husband and child dying in a fire, which is quite dark for Hallmark.
    • The female lead commits breaking and entering using skeleton keys to solve a crime.
    • A subplot involves a bounty hunter attempting to murder the Sheriff on the road.
    • A young girl is cast as a 'Wise Man' in the Christmas pageant because they are short on boys.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Ellie King suffering from recurring nightmares of the tragic fire that killed her husband, Owen, and their daughter, Jessica. Seeking solace, she travels to Haddington to visit her brother, Sheriff Aaron Davis, and his two children, Christopher and Annabelle. Upon arrival, she is introduced to the town's deputy, Michael Strode, and Erik Johnson, a young man with a troubled past whom Aaron has mentored. The town is currently in a frenzy over the impending arrival of the railroad, which promises to turn Haddington into a 'boom town.' This excitement is exploited by Weaver, a ruthless local lawyer and landowner who is aggressively foreclosing on properties to profit from the new route. Aaron decides to travel to the county land office in Evittsville to purchase a parcel of land for his family's future, leaving Ellie in charge of the children and Michael as the acting sheriff. During his absence, a secret romance between Erik and the Mayor's daughter, Suzanna, is discovered by the Mayor, who forbids them from seeing each other due to Erik's father's criminal reputation. On the night a railroad representative brings the final route maps to the Mayor, a fire breaks out in the Mayor's barn. In the chaos, the maps are stolen. Because Erik was seen arguing with the Mayor and lurking near the barn, he is arrested by Michael. Ellie, convinced of Erik's innocence, begins her own investigation. She notices Weaver's suspicious behavior and his lack of Christmas spirit. Meanwhile, Aaron is ambushed on his way home by a criminal seeking a bounty, leading to a violent confrontation on the trail. Back in town, Ellie uses her brother's set of skeleton keys to break into Weaver's office. She discovers the stolen railroad plans hidden there, confirming that Weaver set the fire as a distraction to steal the maps and manipulate land values. The film reaches its climax as Ellie is confronted by Weaver at gunpoint in his office, forcing her to use her wits to survive and bring the truth to light before the railroad representative leaves town.
