    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The 'Orphan Train' selection process involves a farmer checking a teenage girl's teeth like a horse.
    • A scene where Belinda seemingly performs a miracle resuscitation on a dead puppy.
    • The heavy focus on the legalities of 19th-century child abuse and guardianship.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Missie Lahaye and her son Mattie saying a final goodbye at the graves of her husband Willie and daughter Kathy before moving back to her childhood home to be near her parents, Clark and Marty Davis. Missie, determined to stand on her own feet, takes a job as the local schoolteacher and moves into a small fixer-upper house. During a church service, Pastor Joe announces the arrival of an 'orphan train' from New York. At the station, Missie is moved to take in Belinda Marshall, a 14-year-old girl who is fiercely protective of her past and insists her father will eventually return for her. Belinda's younger brother, Jacob, is unfortunately taken by the cold and miserly Hank Pettis, who views the boy only as free farm labor. Belinda initially resists Missie’s kindness, preferring to sleep in a shed and refusing to learn to read. However, Missie discovers Belinda’s hidden talent for nursing when the girl helps save a newborn puppy and tends to Mattie after a fall. The plot thickens when Missie and Sheriff Zach Tyler discover Belinda has been sneaking out at night to bring stolen food to Jacob. They find that Jacob is being physically abused and starved by Pettis, but Zach explains that they lack the legal standing to remove the boy from his guardian. Meanwhile, a romantic spark develops between Missie and Zach, though Missie feels that loving another man would be a betrayal of her late husband's memory. Character growth occurs when Missie teaches Belinda to read using a letter the girl's father left her; the letter reveals the heartbreaking truth that their father legally relinquished his rights forever, shattering Belinda's hope of his return. This shared trauma of loss brings Missie and Belinda closer. The conflict reaches a climax when Belinda and Jacob attempt to run away together during a violent rainstorm. Zach leads a search party and, after a moment of desperate prayer, finds the children trapped in a flash-flood-prone wash. Zach uses his authority to pressure Pettis into surrendering guardianship of Jacob by threatening him with arrest for his treatment of the boy. The film concludes with Missie finally letting go of her grief, accepting a locket from Zach as a symbol of their new love, and welcoming Jacob into her home to live with Belinda and Mattie as a complete family.
