    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A patient refuses treatment for a 'carbuncle on his backside' because he is embarrassed to be seen by a woman.
    • The graphic description of a gangrene-infected leg needing to be 'taken off at the knee'.
    • The emergency medical procedure involving lancing a child's throat with a scalpel is surprisingly intense for a Hallmark film.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in the frontier town of Anderson Corner, where Belinda 'Lindy' Tyler demonstrates a natural gift for caretaking by treating a schoolchild's injury. Despite her extensive self-study of medical texts, Doc Jackson refuses to hire her as an assistant, claiming that women are meant for marriage and motherhood, not medicine. Meanwhile, Drew Simpson, a refined lawyer from New York City, arrives to settle the estate of his late uncle. He initially clashes with Belinda over his 'enlightened' but patronizing views on women's roles. The plot intensifies when Mrs. Stafford-Smith, a wealthy woman traveling through town, suffers a stroke. Doc Jackson, overwhelmed by a breech birth elsewhere, leaves Belinda to monitor the patient. Belinda uses 'movement therapy' techniques she read about in medical journals to help the woman regain use of her arm, despite the patient's initial bitterness and grief over the loss of her own children. A secondary subplot involves Sadie Kent, a local mother who is secretly illiterate. Belinda's mother, Missie, helps Sadie learn to read at the schoolhouse, which causes tension with Sadie's husband, Charles, who fears his wife will outgrow him. Drew assists Charles by drafting adoption papers for Sadie's son, Caleb, to protect him from a biological father in prison, which helps bridge the gap between the 'sophisticated' New Yorker and the 'rustic' locals. As Belinda and Drew's romance blossoms, they face a major obstacle: Belinda's dream of medical school requires her to leave for Boston, while Drew is expected to return to his father's prestigious law firm in New York. The emotional climax occurs when Belinda assists Doc Jackson in a gruesome leg amputation for a patient named Jonas Barnes. When Jonas dies from the trauma, Belinda loses her confidence and nearly gives up on medicine. However, she is forced into action when a young girl, Sally, begins suffocating from a throat abscess. With no doctor available, Belinda performs a terrifying lancing procedure that saves the girl's life. Recognizing her talent, Mrs. Stafford-Smith offers to fund Belinda's medical education in Boston. In the final resolution, Drew realizes he cannot live without Belinda and proposes, promising to move his law practice to wherever she needs to be. The film ends with their wedding and the couple departing for Boston so Belinda can fulfill her dream of becoming a doctor.
