    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The use of 'Scotch Broom' (a toxic weed) as a legitimate medical solution to avoid a C-section.
    • The midwife's ability to diagnose pregnancy based on how 'shiny' a woman's hair is.
    • A high-stakes cave-in rescue occurring in the middle of a domestic medical drama.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Annie Watson and her husband Peter arriving in Sikeston to stay with Dr. Belinda Owens and her husband Lee while Peter is away on a surveying job. Belinda, a university-trained physician, is delighted to host her best friend, but the atmosphere shifts when Peter's mother, Mary Watson—a blunt and traditional midwife—arrives unexpectedly. Belinda is currently treating Mabel McQueen, a mother of six suffering from severe anemia, whose husband Lloyd deeply distrusts doctors due to a past family tragedy. Meanwhile, Lee hires a young apprentice named Joshua Coyle, who quickly catches the eye of the Owens' adopted daughter, Lillian. The two bond over Lillian's love of literature, specifically Jules Verne's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'. Medical conflict arises when Annie experiences fainting spells and sharp pains. Belinda diagnoses her with eclampsia and prescribes strict bed rest in a darkened room. Mary, however, scoffs at these 'modern' methods, insisting that Annie needs sunlight and movement to prevent a difficult labor. This creates a constant tug-of-war between Belinda's scientific approach and Mary's 'old wives' tales.' Parallel to this, Lillian and Joshua's romance faces an obstacle when Lee, protective of his daughter's future and college aspirations, forbids them from seeing each other after they stay out past curfew. This leads to a dramatic subplot where Lillian, seeking solitude in a cave she considers her 'Nemo's hideout,' is trapped during a collapse. Joshua and Lee must work together to rescue her, which ultimately softens Lee's stance on the young man. The story reaches its climax when Annie suffers a seizure, confirming Belinda's fears of eclampsia. Belinda prepares for a dangerous and primitive Cesarean section, but Mary intervenes with a traditional herbal induction using 'Scotch Broom.' Despite her skepticism, Belinda allows the remedy to be used when labor begins to progress naturally. In a tense delivery scene, the two women combine their expertise to successfully deliver a healthy baby girl. The film concludes with the resolution of the McQueen subplot, as Mary's bluntness finally convinces Lloyd to allow his wife to take the necessary medicine. As the Watsons depart, Belinda reveals the 'miracle' she has been waiting for: she is finally pregnant, validating Mary's earlier observation that the 'shine' in Belinda's hair was a sign of fertility.
