Wedding of a Lifetime

The film opens on the tenth anniversary of Darby Sinclaire and Jake Johnson's engagement. During a celebratory dinner with their families, the couple realizes they have spent a decade prioritizing everyone else's needs—Nana's health, family businesses, and Jake's recovery from a skiing injury—while their own romance has stagnated. That night, they mutually and amicably decide to break up, agreeing to remain best friends. However, before they can break the news, the morning show 'Hey Good Day' arrives in Abbottville to announce that the entire town has nominated them for a 'Wedding of a Lifetime' contest. Fearing the emotional impact on their families and seeing a potential marketing boost for Darby's 'Scientific Southern Cooking' show and Jake's struggling ski shop, they decide to fake their engagement for the duration of the contest. In Chicago, they compete against three other couples in a series of increasingly ridiculous challenges, including a blindfolded egg dash and a compatibility quiz where they are the only couple to achieve a perfect score. Their deep knowledge of one another makes them the favorites, but the 'fake' nature of their relationship creates internal conflict. Darby is particularly protective of Jake, even trying to fake an injury for him to prevent him from actually hurting his ankle again, which leads to an argument about her tendency to hold him back. During a secret, non-televised night out in Chicago, they share a romantic bike ride and realize that the feelings they are 'faking' are actually resurfacing. The competition culminates in a live wedding broadcast from Abbottville. The production is a gaudy, over-produced mess featuring 'small-town chic' braided dresses and professional extras cast as bridesmaids. Overwhelmed by the artifice and the weight of their lie, Darby flees the altar. In a private moment with their families, they confess that they had broken up before the show started. Surprisingly, their families are supportive, admitting they put too much pressure on the couple. In a final live segment, they explain their journey to the audience, choosing to end the show on their own terms. The film concludes with a private, authentic wedding ceremony where Jake surprises Darby with tickets to New York so she can pursue her culinary dreams, and Darby reveals she has helped him launch his own ski school, proving they are finally ready to support each other's individual growth.
