    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • Cassie's shop doors open automatically via 'magic' despite no sensors
    • A neighbor's dachshund manages to eat a five-tier wedding cake in its entirety
    • The protagonist's 'witchcraft' is treated as a casual personality trait rather than a supernatural phenomenon
    • The stolen bank money was hidden under the floorboards of the protagonist's shop for a decade

Why we’d put this one on

Catherine Bell's Cassie Nightingale gets a Christmas Eve proposal from Chief Jake, played by Chris Potter, leaving them six days to throw a wedding while an ex-con returns to Middleton, stirring up a decade-old bank robbery and $100,000 in missing loot. At a weirdness of 8 the Good Witch magic is delightfully offhand: Cassie's shop doors open by themselves with no sensors, and a neighbor's dachshund somehow eats an entire five-tier wedding cake. At a 7.1 it is one of the better-loved entries in the franchise, warm and twinkly with a redemption thread and a wedding to pull off against the odds. Where the missing money ends up stays sealed.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Chief Jake Russell attempting to find the perfect Christmas gift for his fiancée, Cassie Nightingale. Spontaneously, he decides that the best gift would be a family, proposing they marry on Christmas Eve—just six days away. Cassie agrees, despite the logistical nightmare. Meanwhile, Leon Deeks, a man Jake arrested ten years ago for the Shelbyville National Bank robbery, is released from prison and returns to Middleton. Jake is immediately suspicious, especially since the $100,000 stolen in the robbery was never recovered. Leon attempts to reconnect with his ex-wife Ruth and daughter Jodi, but Ruth rejects him, fearing he hasn't changed. As wedding preparations begin, Martha Tinsdale, the Mayor's wife, insists on becoming the wedding planner, envisioning an over-the-top '12 Days of Christmas' theme. However, Martha's husband Tom reveals they have lost all their money in failed real estate investments, forcing Martha to look for a job and eventually quit the wedding planning in a huff. Subplots involve Jake's father-in-law George considering a move to Montreal, and Jake's daughter Lori losing Cassie's mother's heirloom wedding ring. Lori suspects Jodi Deeks might have stolen it, causing a rift between her and her brother Brandon, who is friends with Jodi. Cassie subtly intervenes in everyone's lives, giving Leon a Santa suit to help him earn the town's trust and providing Martha with a job lead. The wedding faces several 'Hallmark' disasters: the marriage license is issued to the wrong couple, the minister's car breaks down in a snowstorm, and a neighbor's dachshund eats the entire wedding cake. In the climax, Martha and the Mayor arrive to save the day; the Mayor uses his powers to officiate the wedding, and Martha reveals she found the missing ring in her own purse. Leon Deeks arrives at the ceremony to return the $100,000, which he had hidden under the floorboards of Cassie's shop years ago when it was an abandoned building. He chooses to turn the money in to give himself a 'second chance' and earn his daughter's respect. The film ends with a magical snowfall as Jake and Cassie are finally married, and the family is united.
