    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with an unconventional courtroom scene where McBride successfully uses an African Grey parrot named Shirley as a witness to identify a murderer. Shortly after, a woman named Whitney Collier picks up a young hospital orderly, Dudley Banks, at a diner and gives him a ride to Los Angeles. The next morning, Whitney is found strangled in her car, and her handbag—containing $5,000—is discovered in Dudley's room. Despite the mounting evidence, Dr. Megan Weill convinces McBride to defend Dudley, believing in his inherent goodness. McBride's investigation, aided by his tech-savvy associate Phil Newberry, takes a bizarre turn when they realize Whitney Collier didn't exist before her marriage a year prior. They discover she was simultaneously living as Monica Karpek (married to a San Francisco mob enforcer) and Arlene Ferguson (married to a struggling insurance salesman in Simi Valley). As McBride juggles threats from the FBI—who are using one of the husbands in a sting operation—and the pressure from his former partner, Detective Jake Fitzsimmons, he finds a secret condo where the victim was preparing a fourth identity, 'Jocelyn Dawson,' to flee the country. The climax occurs in the courtroom where McBride systematically dismantles the alibis of the husbands before turning his focus to Fitzsimmons. He reveals that the detective had discovered the victim's multiple identities and was blackmailing her. When she decided to stop paying and disappear, Fitzsimmons used his police authority to pull her over and murder her. McBride produces a thread from a windbreaker found at the crime scene that matches a jacket Fitzsimmons recently sent to the cleaners, leading to Dudley's acquittal and the detective's arrest.
