    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The murder evidence is a 'flip-book' of 40 still photos of a football game.
    • The killer uses a Public Service Announcement about world hunger to construct a fake murder recording.
    • A character named Patty repeatedly stalks the legal team while pretending to be a government official just for a 'journalism break'.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with defense attorney McBride winning a minor case for a senior citizen accused of shoplifting, showcasing his sharp wit and dedication to the underdog. The main plot begins at KTMB radio station, where the 'Ron and Bob' show is a massive success, despite the toxic relationship between the hosts. Ron Garrison, a cruel shock-jock, is offered a solo contract by station manager Paul Belsen, effectively firing his partner Bob Carter. Bob discovers the betrayal and publicly threatens Ron, stating he will only 'calm down' when Ron is dead. Shortly after, Ron is found murdered in his home. A 911 call placed from Ron's phone features Ron begging for his life and Bob's voice saying 'Goodbye, Ron' followed by a gunshot. Bob is arrested fleeing the scene, though he claims he arrived after the shooting and panicked. McBride and his associate Phil Newberry begin investigating the staff at KTMB. They discover that Ron was a serial blackmailer who used his position to exploit his coworkers. Suspects include Leslie Summers, who was having an affair with the married Paul Belsen; Ed Harding, whose marriage Ron ruined with a cruel on-air prank; and Kyle Ward, a sports host. Phil is repeatedly distracted by a mysterious woman named Patty, who claims to be from the DA's office but is actually an aspiring journalist working as a production assistant. McBride's investigation takes a turn when he finds a series of photos at Ron's house that, when flipped through, show Kyle Ward intentionally dropping a game-winning pass during his professional football career. It becomes clear Ron was extorting Kyle for two-thirds of his salary to keep the secret. In the courtroom, the prosecution plays the damning 911 tape. McBride and Phil counter with a high-tech defense involving an audio expert, Dr. Green. They demonstrate that the 'murder' captured on the 911 call was actually a 'mash-up' of a Public Service Announcement (PSA) about hunger that Ron and Bob had recorded together. The phrase 'Goodbye, Ron' was taken from the end of the PSA, and the 'gunshot' was a sound effect frequently used on Kyle Ward's sports show. McBride proves that Kyle Ward prerecorded his radio broadcast to create an alibi, went to Ron's house to kill him with a silenced weapon, and then used the edited audio to frame Bob. Faced with the forensic evidence, Kyle Ward confesses on the stand, admitting he had to get Ron off his back. The film concludes with Bob's exoneration and McBride sharing a celebratory dinner with his romantic interest, Roberta, a contact from the DA's office.
