    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The mall Santa is heavily implied to be the actual Santa Claus, despite having a 'mole' on his nose that children mistake for Rudolph's red dot.
    • The assistant manager of the bistro is also a Zumba instructor who gives the protagonist's husband neck massages in the middle of the restaurant.
    • The children believe a British illustrator is a magical elf sent from the North Pole.

Why we’d put this one on

Katie Leclerc and Rafael de la Fuente play a separated couple whose two kids get a magic pen from a mysterious Santa and start writing wishes to bring their parents back together. Weirdness 9, and the texture is wonderfully odd: a mall Santa with a nose mole that kids mistake for Rudolph's red dot, plus a bistro manager who moonlights as a Zumba instructor and gives the dad neck massages mid-restaurant. At 5.9 it is a soft, family-forward reconciliation story. The kids genuinely believe a British illustrator is a North Pole elf, and the movie lets them.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Rebecca, a children's book author, and Enrique, the manager of his family's bistro, living in a state of separation. While they attempt to maintain family traditions like tree decorating, the tension is palpable. Rebecca is facing a strict Christmas Eve deadline for her third book but suffers from writer's block, while Enrique is overwhelmed by the demands of the restaurant and his mother Camilla's financial needs. During a trip to see Santa, the children meet a man who claims to be the 'real' Santa and gives them a 'magic pen' that only works for those 'true of heart.' The children immediately test the pen by wishing for a puppy, and a stray dog named Noel appears at their grandmother's house the next morning. This convinces the children that the pen is truly magical. As the kids continue to write letters, their wishes appear to come true through a series of coincidences: Rebecca receives a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and a talented new illustrator named Liam arrives to help her with her book—whom the children believe is an 'elf' sent by Santa. However, the parents' relationship remains strained. In therapy, it is revealed that the core of their conflict is Enrique's decision to use their joint savings to save his mother's bistro without consulting Rebecca. Misunderstandings arise when Enrique hires Candy, a Zumba instructor and assistant manager, and Rebecca begins working closely with Liam. As Christmas Eve approaches, the children become frustrated that their ultimate wish—their parents' reunion—hasn't happened. They run away to find the mall Santa again, leading to a frantic search by Rebecca and Enrique. The 'Santa' explains to the children that while he can't force people to make choices, the magic is actually within them. This crisis brings the parents together, and they realize that the 'miracles' were actually the result of family members (Camilla and Maria) meddling to help fulfill the kids' wishes. Enrique finally shares his true feelings through a song he wrote, and Rebecca realizes she values his devotion to family. The film concludes with Rebecca successfully pitching her new book—based on the magic pen story—and the family celebrating Christmas morning together, fully reconciled.
