    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A judge acting as a bounty hunter and taking his own prisoner on a cross-country manhunt
    • The antagonist's 'family' consists entirely of a cult-like group of orphan boys
    • The judge uses a 'secret son' revelation as a legal strategy to bypass a lynch mob

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Circuit Judge John Goodnight arriving in the town of Rawlins, Wyoming, where he unexpectedly reunites with Callie, a woman he loved sixteen years prior in Chicago. Callie, now a widowed seamstress, is struggling to raise her son, Will. The town's peace is shattered when the Spradling gang, led by the ruthless Deke Spradling, robs the local bank. During the ensuing shootout, Deke's brother Horace is killed, and Will—who has been riding with the gang—is captured by Goodnight. The townspeople, led by the opportunistic lawyer Lucius Breed, demand Will be hanged immediately, but Goodnight insists on a fair trial. Callie visits John in secret and reveals that Will is actually his son, a fact she hid to protect the boy's future. During the trial, Goodnight realizes that while Will is an accessory, he has not committed murder, as confirmed by a witness whose brother was killed by Deke. Recognizing that the town will never let Will live, Goodnight takes the boy out of jail under the guise of using him to track the rest of the gang. As they travel, John tries to bond with the boy and teach him about honor, even claiming Will is his son to protect him from a vengeful widow. They eventually locate the Spradling hideout, where Deke has recruited a 'family' of young orphans to do his bidding. Will initially appears to betray John to rejoin Deke, but it is a ruse to get close to the outlaw. A final confrontation ensues where John fights Deke hand-to-hand while Will chooses to reject the outlaw life. Deke is captured and brought to justice. Goodnight arranges for the other orphan boys to receive apprenticeships with the railroad rather than prison. The film concludes with Callie and Will departing for San Francisco to pursue their dreams, while John remains behind to continue his circuit, leaving the door open for a future reunion with his newfound son.
