Why we’d put this one on

Catherine Bell's Good Witch returns for Halloween as a stranger named Joseph Weld turns up at Grey House hunting a hidden key to a lost fortune, with a vengeful twin lurking behind the strange accidents around town. Bailee Madison's Grace is wrestling with classmates who call her a witch, and her own magical heritage. Weirdness 9, with charms that mirror energy to hide a twin and a century-old curse tied to a safety deposit box. At 7.6 it is one of the best-loved entries here, the kind of gentle small-town magic the Good Witch crowd adores. James Denton plays Dr. Sam Radford.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Joseph Weld arriving at Grey House, claiming that Cassie's ancestor, Laurel Merrywick, cursed his great-grandfather Henry a century ago, leading to his family's ruin. Joseph believes a key to a safety deposit box containing a fortune is hidden within the house. Shortly after his arrival, dangerous 'accidents' begin occurring, including electrical fires and equipment failures. While Cassie remains calm and hospitable, her son Brandon and Chief of Police Derek are deeply suspicious of Joseph's motives. Meanwhile, Cassie’s daughter Grace is experiencing a crisis of identity; she is being teased at school for being 'weird' and tells Cassie that 'being a Merrywick is ruining my life,' leading her to reject the family's traditional Halloween preparations. In a parallel subplot, Mayor Martha Tinsdale is in a state of panic because her elaborate Halloween maze is a 'death trap' and her pumpkin display is ruined, while Abigail Pershing creates chaos by running for Harvest Queen against the perennial winner, Stephanie, using her restaurant to solicit votes. The central mystery takes a turn when Brandon discovers that Joseph has an identical twin brother, Jackson, who has a criminal record. Cassie realizes that Jackson is lurking on the property and using a magical charm to 'mirror' Joseph’s energy, effectively hiding his dark intentions from her intuition. The conflict reaches a climax when Jackson is caught in the basement of Grey House attempting to steal the family treasure. However, the 'treasure' turns out not to be gold, but a historical truth: Joseph finds a letter revealing that Laurel Merrywick and his great-grandmother were actually close friends, and the key was left for safekeeping, not as part of a curse. This revelation heals the rift between the families. Grace eventually finds her confidence, using her intuition to outmaneuver school bullies and embracing her role in the family. The movie concludes at the Harvest Festival, where Abigail gracefully withdraws from the race to let Stephanie win, and Sam Radford hints at a deeper romantic future with Cassie, acknowledging the magical bond they have formed.
