    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The town's obsession with 'Bessie,' a local Loch Ness-style lake monster.
    • A 'Giant Pumpkin Regatta' where a surgeon races a hollowed-out vegetable.
    • The concept of a 'Halloween Triathlon' between two rival mayors.
    • The town attempting to carve over 6,000 pumpkins to beat a state record.
    • A 25-year-old grudge based entirely on oversleeping due to aromatherapy.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Cassie Nightingale and her husband Sam Radford attempting to celebrate their first Halloween as a married couple, though their romantic plans are repeatedly thwarted by a leaking boat and domestic mishaps. Meanwhile, Mayor Martha Tinsdale discovers an 1891 diary entry by Elizabeth Merriwick describing a 'Halloween bonfire' tradition intended to bring harmony to the town. Martha decides to recreate this event on a grand scale to outdo the rival town of Blairsville. Into this atmosphere of festive preparation arrives Autumn Delaney, Cassie’s college roommate who abruptly left school decades ago. Autumn is a landscape designer who is initially cold toward Cassie, eventually revealing that she blames a herbal sleep potion Cassie gave her in college for making her oversleep and miss a crucial fellowship interview at Caledon Gardens. As Autumn reluctantly helps design the bonfire, several subplots unfold. Sam and his son Nick receive a mysterious four-leaf clover in the mail addressed to 'Sam Radford' with no return address. They embark on a 'mystery' to find the sender, eventually using lemon oil to reveal a faded postmark from 1974. They discover the charm was meant for a different Sam Radford—the deceased fiancé of a local woman named Samantha Thorlo. Simultaneously, the town is engaged in a fierce competition with Blairsville to break the state record for carved jack-o-lanterns, and Sam is roped into a 'Halloween Triathlon' against Blairsville's Mayor Davenport. The triathlon includes bizarre events like the 'Halloween Hammer' and a 'Giant Pumpkin Regatta,' where Sam’s pumpkin boat sinks, but he earns respect by helping his injured opponent in the final hay-bale obstacle course. The emotional climax occurs when Autumn confronts Cassie about the 'curse' of her magic. Cassie provides a characteristic lesson in perspective, explaining that 'what you give power has power' and that Autumn’s own fear, not a herbal oil, was the true obstacle to her success. Autumn finds peace and completes the bonfire design just as the 1890s period costumes arrive from Saskatchewan. In the final scenes, the town gathers for the bonfire. Although they initially appear to fall short of the pumpkin-carving record, Mayor Davenport arrives with 51 pumpkins to help Middleton break the record as a gesture of sportsmanship. The film ends with Tom Tinsdale surprising Martha by proposing a renewal of their wedding vows, and Cassie and Sam finally finding a perfect, quiet moment together under the moonlight.
