    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The extreme coincidence of finding a painting in a basement that features the exact same veil purchased randomly in another city.

Why we’d put this one on

Three college friends buy a 19th-century Italian wedding veil rumored to deliver true love to whoever holds it, and Lacey Chabert goes first. Alison Sweeney and Autumn Reeser play her friends, so the female friendship is the real heart here. Avery meets a charming philanthropist, played by Kevin McGarry, then a misunderstanding convinces him she is already engaged. At a 7.3 it is one of the best-reviewed in this set, and at a weirdness of 7 it earns the score: everyone believes deeply in a piece of bedazzled lace having matchmaking powers. Whether the legend is real is the point, so no spoilers.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with three best friends—Avery, Emma, and Tracy—on their annual antiquing trip in San Francisco. In an antique shop, they discover an exquisite, handmade 19th-century Italian wedding veil. The shopkeeper, Hilda, shares a legend: whoever owns the veil will find their true love. Noticing an embroidered 'A' on the lace, the friends decide to buy it together and pass it among themselves, starting with Avery. Shortly after, Avery has a 'meet-cute' with Peter Hastings while arguing over a taxi. They spend a romantic day together visiting a museum and eating at a mac and cheese shop, but when Peter sees Avery with the wedding veil at the airport, he mistakenly assumes she is the bride-to-be he heard about earlier and leaves without exchanging contact information. Back in Boston, Avery is an associate curator at the Stanbridge Museum, competing for a promotion against her ambitious colleague, Jason. Her boss, Sonya, assigns her to lead the museum's annual gala alongside a new board member, who turns out to be Peter. The working relationship is initially strained because Peter remains convinced Avery is engaged, while Avery is confused by his hot-and-cold behavior. During a late night at the museum, Avery discovers a long-forgotten, grime-covered painting in the basement: 'Portrait of a Bride' by Claudio Amici. She convinces the board to let her restore and unveil it at the gala, a move that could secure her promotion. As they work together, the romantic tension builds. The misunderstanding finally clears at the wedding of Avery’s coworker, Lucy. Peter arrives with his cousin as a date, expecting to see Avery get married, only to realize she was the maid of honor all along. They begin dating, but new conflicts arise. Peter feels pressured by his mother, Grace, to run the family’s biotech foundation, despite his secret passion for teaching art to children. Avery encourages him to follow his dreams, but when she accidentally mentions his teaching aspirations to Grace, Peter retreats, fearing she is interfering with his family obligations. In the final act, the restoration of the Amici painting faces a crisis when the canvas buckles, but Avery’s friends help her find a specialist to save the project. Peter’s mother eventually encourages him to seek his own happiness, realizing Avery was right about his passion. At the gala, the painting is successfully unveiled, and Peter publicly confesses his love for Avery. The film concludes with their wedding, where the friends realize the bride in the Amici painting is wearing the exact same veil Avery bought. Avery passes the veil to Emma, setting up the next chapter of the legend.
