    How unusual is it?

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Dr. Emilia Priestly and Detective Jason Trent collaborating on a script for a high-end mystery resort called Mystery Island. Baroness Jane 'Janey' Alcott, the resort's COO, pressures them to create a contest that 'absolutely kills' to boost the island's profile. The contest winners arrive, including NYPD Detective Bobby Teller, his brother Davis, podcaster Alice Watley, and her aunt Louise. They are joined by best-selling author Cassandra Cornwall (CC) and her husband Ted. James Elton is introduced as Janey’s secret boyfriend, an actor hired to play a boisterous Texan oilman who is the designated 'victim' of the game. The weekend begins with Fredricks, the house manager, explaining that 'murdered' guests must retire to the 'Deceased Bungalow.' During a staged scene where James is supposedly poisoned, a real explosion occurs at a gazebo. Fredricks is found dead, having triggered a tripwire intended for someone else. Before dying, he whispers 'Oreste,' which Emilia initially misinterprets as 'Arrest.' Jason and Emilia take charge of the investigation, discovering that Fredricks was secretly selling unused mystery plots from the island's founder to CC, who was suffering from writer's block. The tension rises when Bobby Teller is found dead in his room, appearing to have hanged himself after typing a confession. However, Emilia notices the note uses the British spelling 'defence,' casting suspicion on Janey. Realizing the suicide was staged, the investigators gather the guests for a final reveal. They expose James Elton as James Elton Frankenheimer, a man whose father died in prison after being arrested by Jason’s mentor, Detective Ruiz. James had murdered Ruiz years prior in revenge while working on a cruise ship. Fredricks, who worked on the same ship, recognized James during an off-Broadway performance of 'Orestes' and began blackmailing him. James came to the island to kill Fredricks and later murdered Bobby Teller after the detective used listening devices to uncover James's true identity. James is arrested, and Janey, though heartbroken, decides to keep the island running. Emilia agrees to write a book about the events, and she and Jason hint at a future together as partners in both work and life.
