The story opens with a formal engagement photo shoot for Crown Princess Coralina of Vostieri and Crown Prince Desmond Carlyle of Androvia, whose marriage is meant to heal centuries of tension over the Alsinian province. The arrangement collapses when Coralina elopes with a plumber, leaving both royal families scrambling for a new solution. Desmond's father and Beatrix's father, King Winston, treat the broken engagement as both a diplomatic insult and a potential trigger for renewed conflict. Desmond's advisers realize that Coralina's younger sister, Princess Beatrix Ileana Halston Von Lindmore Eugard, is the only practical substitute. Beatrix has been living a quiet life in Boston after being pushed into hiding years earlier by public cruelty over a press photo, and she is stunned when her best friend Chloe learns she is actually royal. Beatrix steps in with Chloe's conflict-resolution style and turns the luncheon into an impromptu workshop, forcing both fathers to confront how much of their hostility is inherited rather than earned. Her intervention leads to a compromise: shared occupancy of Alsinian, a new independent council, and a trade agreement that benefits both countries. The political marriage is no longer necessary, which suddenly forces Beatrix and Desmond to ask what they actually want. After the treaty is signed, Beatrix realizes she is heartbroken at the thought of losing Desmond. Chloe urges her to go after him, and she races to the border with a borrowed car to stop him before he leaves for good.
