    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist is a juror who causes a mistrial and then immediately becomes the defendant's lawyer.
    • The sidekick is a former Public Defender who uses his personal trust fund to buy high-tech surveillance gear for a private practice.
    • The murder is solved using the 'unique rhythm' of a heart monitor beep caught in the background of a phone call.
    • McBride inherits a ranch from a client who is currently in San Quentin for killing his wife.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with the discovery of wealthy businessman Carl Harriman in a coma following a barbiturate overdose. His wife, Claire, is immediately suspected by Detective Roberta Hansen after a glass with drug residue is found in the dishwasher. During the initial trial, Claire is represented by a struggling public defender, Phil Newberry, while McBride—a cynical former detective turned lawyer—sits on the jury. McBride becomes the sole holdout for acquittal, arguing that the prosecution failed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, resulting in a mistrial. Following the trial, McBride decides to represent Claire himself, while Phil Newberry quits his government job to become McBride's assistant, funded by his own secret trust fund. McBride also deals with a personal subplot involving a run-down ranch he inherited and a dog named Jesse. McBride's investigation focuses on Carl’s adult children, Tony and Emily, and his executive secretary, Elena Ashfield. He discovers that Tony has a weak alibi involving a bachelor party and is having an affair with Elena. Emily is revealed to be a heroin addict who has been stealing from the estate to fund her habit. Meanwhile, Claire is hiding a secret of her own: she has been using her allowance to support her brother, a paranoid schizophrenic living in a trailer park. The tension escalates when Carl is murdered in the hospital via a lethal potassium injection. Claire is charged with murder and remanded without bail. McBride uses a high-tech sound lab to analyze a phone call from the maid, Marta, who claimed she was being threatened. He discovers that the background noise of the call contains the specific, irregular heartbeat rhythm of Carl Harriman’s heart monitor, proving Marta was actually in the hospital room at the time of the murder. In a dramatic courtroom finale, McBride exposes Marta as the killer, acting on behalf of Tony, leading to Claire's exoneration. The film ends with McBride and Detective Hansen heading out for a celebratory dinner, maintaining their flirtatious professional rivalry.
