    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Abby Foster in Seattle, finalizing plans to move to Paris with her fiancé, Edward, for a major career opportunity and their upcoming wedding. While preparing her marriage license, she discovers that her divorce from her high school sweetheart, Luke Walker, was never legally finalized due to their late attorney's failure to file the paperwork twenty years prior. Forced to return to her hometown in Benton County to resolve the matter in person, Abby reunites with Luke at a court hearing. To her frustration, Luke hesitates to sign the dissolution papers immediately, claiming he needs time to reflect on the situation, which forces Abby to stay in town through the weekend. During her stay, Abby reconnects with her family and Luke’s sister, Robin. She and Luke revisit significant locations from their youth, including a local carousel where they had their first kiss. The tension between them is palpable, fueled by Abby's lingering resentment over Luke abandoning her with only a note when they were eighteen. However, a major turning point occurs when Abby’s mother, Emily, confesses a devastating secret: twenty years ago, Emily intercepted Abby’s Princeton acceptance letter and pressured Luke into leaving, convincing him that staying married to him would ruin Abby’s bright future. Luke, believing he was acting in Abby's best interest, left without telling her the truth to ensure she would pursue her dreams. As Abby processes this revelation, her fiancé Edward arrives in town to surprise her. Although Edward is kind and supportive, he quickly senses that Abby is emotionally distant. After witnessing Abby and Luke sharing a dance at the local summer festival, Edward realizes that Abby still harbors deep feelings for her first husband. In a moment of maturity, Edward breaks off the engagement, telling Abby he deserves '100 percent' of someone's heart. Meanwhile, Luke, believing Abby still wants to move to Paris, signs the divorce papers early Monday morning to set her free. Rushing to the courthouse, Abby finds the divorce is already final. However, Luke arrives shortly after, attempting to 'take back' his signature. In front of Judge Perkins, the two confess their enduring love for one another. The film concludes with Abby and Luke remarried, having found a way to balance their professional dreams while staying together.
