Why we’d put this one on

Alison Sweeney plays a copywriter and devoted Jane Austen fan whose wish to meet her favorite author comes true when the literal ghost of Jane Austen turns up and stays in her apartment for days. Weirdness 9, and Austen is the best part: obsessed with whether modern men own cattle or livestock, and watching a film adaptation of her own book to rate the actors' looks. Benjamin Ayres plays the tech mogul who bought her favorite bookstore. This 2024 release has no rating yet, but a haunted-by-Jane-Austen premise with a bookstore-romance backbone is exactly the kind of literary swing fans will enjoy.

    How it all plays out

Already seen it, or just can’t wait? Open this up for the whole story, ending included.

    Full story (spoilers)
Lilly Thorpe is a copywriter in Boston whose life revolves around the Jane Austen Society. The film opens with Lilly losing out on a bookstore purchase to an online buyer, only to discover later that the buyer is Trevor Fitzsimmons, a tech mogul who has purchased the beloved Scribbler's bookstore. When her boyfriend Martin proposes a move to Chicago that would require her to abandon her career and book club, Lilly realizes they aren't 'in unison' and breaks up with him. Desperate for guidance, she wishes she could talk to Jane Austen, and the author miraculously appears in her apartment as a supernatural apparition. Jane begins mentoring Lilly on Regency-era manners, dancing, and the importance of a suitor's 'cattle' (wealth). Meanwhile, Lilly's agency is tasked with rebranding Scribbler's for Trevor. Though Lilly initially views Trevor as a 'rake' who wants to digitize the soul out of reading, they begin to bond over their shared love for literature. Jane discovers Lilly's unfinished manuscript and pushes her to complete it, while Lilly also plays matchmaker for her friend Alisha and coworker Brendan. The central conflict peaks when Lilly delivers a moving presentation about the 'magic' of physical books, but then discovers Trevor has purchased the publishing house that wants to sign her, leading her to fear her success is merely a favor. Ultimately, Trevor proves his sincerity by changing bookstore policies to favor in-person customers over online ones. Jane Austen, seeing that Lilly has found her own inspiration and voice, bids a final farewell. The movie concludes with Lilly and Trevor embracing their romance, with Trevor even jokingly looking into 'eco-friendly livestock' to satisfy Jane's cattle requirement.
