    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The Spirit of Christmas Past is a country singer who uses a guitar to time travel.
    • The Spirit of Christmas Future is explicitly omitted because 'the future is a song yet to be written.'
    • The protagonist is haunted by her dead boss who died two years prior.
    • A plot point revolves around a character named 'Emmylou Hairless' the cat.

Why we’d put this one on

Weirdness 9 and a Music City riff on A Christmas Carol with a country-star pedigree. Jessy Schram is a workaholic Nashville TV producer visited by spirits after her late mentor (Wynonna Judd) warns her she is on a dark path, with Wes Brown as the childhood friend she neglected. The casting is the wink: Kix Brooks plays a Spirit of Christmas Past who uses his guitar to time travel, and the Spirit of Christmas Future is cheekily skipped because "the future is a song yet to be written." There is even a hairless cat named Emmylou Hairless. Warm, musical, and pleasantly strange, it is a fun pick for Carol fans.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Vivienne Wake, a high-strung and perfectionist producer, overseeing rehearsals for 'Country Christmas Live.' She is so focused on her career that she is planning to move to Los Angeles to produce the Icon Music Awards, despite the impact on her sister Georgia and their aging father. Her world is upended when she encounters Gavin Chase, her childhood best friend and former flame, who is now managing country star Belinda Manners. Their relationship is strained due to a decade-old professional betrayal where Gavin seemingly chose his career over Vivienne's directing dreams. Vivienne is soon visited by the ghost of her former boss, Marilyn Jinway, who warns her that she is following a lonely path. Marilyn introduces Vivienne to the Spirit of Christmas Past, a guitar-playing man named Pat, who takes her back to her childhood. Vivienne sees the moment her mother left and how she sacrificed her own youth to provide a stable Christmas for Georgia. Crucially, she witnesses the night of the 'betrayal' at Chet Walder's party, discovering that Gavin actually tried to defend her, but was blackmailed by the label head into silence to protect Belinda's career. Next, the Spirit of Christmas Present shows Vivienne the current reality: her sister Georgia is secretly dating a crew member named Parker and hates the idea of law school, but is too intimidated by Vivienne to speak up. Vivienne also sees Gavin's continued devotion to Nashville and his secret charitable work. The conflict peaks when network head Henry Moss demands Vivienne replace Belinda with a younger star, Alexis, for the opening number. Initially, Vivienne complies to secure her LA job, deeply hurting Gavin. However, after seeing Alexis and Belinda bonding over music at a local church, Vivienne realizes she doesn't need a 'Spirit of Christmas Future' to tell her what to do. She defies the network's orders by creating a show-stopping duet for the two women. The special is a massive success. In the aftermath, Vivienne turns down the full-time move to LA, opting to commute so she can stay in Nashville. She gives Georgia her blessing to skip law school and work in production. Finally, Vivienne and Gavin reconcile, watching an old home movie where a young Gavin confesses he wants to be best friends forever, leading to a romantic kiss under the mistletoe.
