Heaven Down Here

The film begins by introducing four individuals facing difficult circumstances on Christmas Eve. Imani is a widowed mother of two struggling with debt and the threat of collections; Felix is a pastor who has lost his church's major holiday donation; Clara is a hospice nurse dealing with a prickly, dying patient named Nancy; and Dan is the lonely manager of Rocko's Diner who hides his failed art career behind a cynical exterior. When a massive nor'easter hits Philadelphia, Imani is forced by Dan to work a late shift, while Felix's car breaks down nearby and Clara stops in to pick up a specific Black Forest cake for her daughter. The four become snowed in at the diner as the city shuts down. Initial tensions flare, particularly between Imani and Dan, after she discovers he stayed at the diner just to play video games while forcing her to work. However, under Felix's spiritual guidance, the group begins to bond. They share a meal of 'loaves and fishes' using the diner's remaining supplies and decorate the space with handmade crafts. Dan reveals he dropped out of art school and draws a beautiful picture for Imani's children, while Imani reveals her talent for singing by performing for her kids over the phone. Amidst the bonding, Clara examines a file she took from her patient Nancy, which contains information about Nancy's late daughter, Noelle. Clara notices a birth certificate for a child named 'Denise Imani' and a photo that matches Imani as a baby. The 'weird' Hallmark miracle occurs when they realize Imani has a 'Star of Bethlehem' birthmark/emblem under her collarbone that matches the signature Noelle carved into all her artwork. This confirms Imani is Nancy's long-lost granddaughter. When the roads clear on Christmas morning, the group's lives are transformed: Felix reunites with his estranged son, Bobby; Imani and her children meet Nancy and are invited to move into her mansion; and the entire group reunites to serve the homeless at Felix's mission dinner, proving that 'heaven' is found in the connections between people.
