    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The guardian angel is a grumpy, sarcastic man who calls the protagonist an 'assignment'.
    • The film treats the invention of 'online sales' and eBay as a magical plot device to save a small-town bookstore.
    • A recurring joke about 'tofu chili' being a bizarre and disgusting futuristic food.
    • The protagonist's meet-cute involves pudding being 'jostled' onto her hair by a bus.

Why we’d put this one on

Weirdness 8 and a second-chance fantasy with a grumpy-angel twist. Elisa Donovan is a lonely New York ad exec who deeply regrets leaving her fiance, Scott (Sebastian Spence), eight years ago, until a wish on a Christmas star flings her back to 1996, a week before her wedding. Cheryl Ladd co-stars. The funny details age it perfectly: her guardian angel is a sarcastic man who calls her his "assignment," eBay and online sales get treated as borderline magic to save a bookstore, and there is a running gag about "tofu chili" as a disgusting food of the future. A charming, dated, time-loop holiday pick.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in New York City, where Eve Simon is a successful advertising executive pitching a campaign for Cumberland Wines based on 'selling memories.' Despite her professional success, her personal life is hollow; she is involved in a dead-end affair with her married boss, Neil Barlow. On Christmas Eve, after Neil cancels their Aspen trip to be with his family, Eve drunkenly laments her life choices to her best friend Mandy. She encounters a mysterious homeless man who tells her to wish upon the Christmas star. Eve wishes for a chance to do things differently and wakes up in her childhood bedroom in Eastborough, Oregon, in December 1996. Eve discovers she has been transported back to the week of her wedding to Scott, her high school sweetheart. She meets her guardian angel, Brother James, who appears as the homeless man from NYC. He explains the rules: she has seven days to live out this week and must face the consequences of her actions. Eve struggles to adapt to 1996 life, being baffled by the lack of cell phones and her previous job as a barista. She reconnects with her parents and realizes how much she missed them during her eight years of self-imposed exile in New York. She also finds herself falling in love with Scott all over again, though she is haunted by the memory of the breakup note she originally wrote him. As the week progresses, Eve uses her future marketing knowledge to help Scott and his father save their struggling bookstore, Eastborough Books, from foreclosure. She introduces the 'revolutionary' concept of 'online sales' and web auctions, which successfully saves the business. However, she receives a phone call from the 1996 version of Neil Barlow, offering her the trainee position in New York that originally lured her away. This forces a climax where Eve must choose between her ambitious career and her life with Scott. On the morning of the wedding, Eve initially writes the same breakup note but ultimately tears it up. She confronts Neil on the phone, insulting his 'fragile post-adolescent intellect' and rejecting the job. She marries Scott in a heartfelt ceremony. Eve then wakes up back in the present day, but her reality has shifted: she is in a beautiful penthouse with Scott, they are celebrating their 8th anniversary, and they own a successful nationwide chain of 150 bookstores. She is still close with her family and Mandy, proving that she successfully 'had it all' by choosing love first.
