Why we’d put this one on

A delightful odd-couple romance, and the goat steals the show. Lacey Chabert plays an aspiring chef and Brennan Elliott a Wall Street trader who unexpectedly co-inherit a run-down country house and have to share it, drawing a literal line down the middle. There is a pregnant goat that eats resumes and a plumbing system you have to sing along with to do the dishes. At a weirdness of 4 it is charming rather than chaotic, with Chabert and Elliott so easy together that it spawned sequels. Cozy city-meets-country comfort.

    Full story (spoilers)
Jenny Fintley is a talented chef working under a verbally abusive head chef in the city. Her life takes a turn when she learns she has inherited half of a country house in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, from a distant relative. At the lawyer's office, she meets Brian Howell, a cynical Wall Street trader who has inherited the other half through his ancestor, the property's former caretaker. Brian wants to sell the 'wreck' immediately, but Jenny is determined to keep it and fulfill her dream of opening a bed and breakfast. After Brian is fired from his firm and finds himself blacklisted on Wall Street, he unexpectedly arrives at the house to claim his half of the residence. The two establish a tense 'half-and-half' living arrangement, dividing the house down the middle. As they struggle with a 'singing' plumbing system, a lack of electricity, and a stubborn goat named Gabby, their friction begins to soften. Brian uses his business acumen to help Jenny brand her 'Jenny's Homemade' pastry line, while Jenny teaches Brian the value of a slower life. Their bond deepens when Gabby the goat gives birth to twins, whom they name Lucy and Ricky. However, the relationship is tested when Jenny's ex-boyfriend, Daryl, arrives to propose marriage, and Brian receives a lucrative job offer to return to New York. Brian initially leaves for the city, but during the B&B's trial opening, he realizes that his high-finance career cannot compare to the happiness he found in the country. He returns to the house, rejects his old life, and proposes to Jenny, finally uniting the two halves of the house and their lives.
