Why we’d put this one on

A commoner-meets-prince favorite with a delicious villain. Lacey Chabert is Emily, a Philadelphia seamstress who learns her boyfriend is secretly Prince Leopold of Cordinia, then spends Christmas at his palace under the icy glare of Jane Seymour's Queen Isadora. Seymour is the whole show, especially once the Queen treats a Philly hoagie like a national scandal and develops a baffling hatred of Benjamin Franklin. At a weirdness of 7 the class-clash comedy runs hot. If you love a snobby royal who needs to be defeated by sheer American warmth, this delivers.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in Philadelphia, where Emily Taylor works in her father's tailor shop and is dating a man named Leo, whom she believes is a simple MBA student. During a breakfast date, Leo reveals his true identity as Prince Leopold of Cordinia and explains that he must return home for Christmas. He invites Emily to join him, revealing that he kept his identity secret to experience a normal life. Upon arriving in the sovereign state of Cordinia, Emily is overwhelmed by the palace's scale and the cold reception from Queen Isadora. The Queen is horrified by Emily's commoner status and her 'quaint' background as a tailor. To complicate matters, the Queen has invited Duchess Natasha, Leo's sophisticated ex-girlfriend, to stay for the holidays in hopes of rekindling their romance. Emily struggles with royal protocols, such as using the correct finger bowls and mastering the waltz, but she finds allies in the palace staff—specifically Victor the butler and Olivia the maid—and a kind Baroness named Galina. Emily also bonds with a local orphan named Poppy, showing her 'common' warmth. The tension peaks when Emily teaches the palace staff how to make 'Philadelphia Hoagies' in the kitchen. Queen Isadora discovers them and, in a fit of rage, fires the staff for neglecting their duties. Feeling that she is a burden to Leo and his future, Emily refuses Leo's initial proposal and returns to Philadelphia. However, the Queen reflects on her own past—revealing she once loved a commoner but gave him up for the throne—and realizes she is making a mistake. She rehires the staff and gives Leo her blessing. Leo and the Queen fly to Philadelphia, where Leo proposes to Emily in her father's shop. The film concludes with a royal wedding in Cordinia, celebrated as a 'Cordinian Christmas miracle.'
