A Beautiful Place to Die: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery

Jeff Jackson, a former Boston detective forced into early retirement by a bullet lodged near his spine, seeks peace on Martha's Vineyard by restoring his father's old boat. His quiet life is interrupted when he discovers the body of a young man, Ray Norris, near the docks. Jeff reunites with Zee Madieras, a local doctor and acting medical examiner, and her father, Chief Madieras. Though initially reluctant to return to police work, Jeff is drawn into the case when he realizes the victim was connected to a high-profile gala for 'Harriet's Hope,' a local foundation. The investigation initially focuses on Gerald Martin, a wealthy accountant whose children, Bradley and Stacy, were seen arguing with Ray. Suspicion also falls on Donovan Fletcher, a shady figure from Boston who owns the boat Ray was using. Zee discovers a glass splinter in the victim's head, identifying the murder weapon as a glass block from a construction site at the yacht club. Jeff and Zee uncover that Ray believed he was Gerald Martin's secret son, but a deeper look into high school yearbooks and bank records reveals the truth: Ray was actually the illegitimate son of Thomas Percy, the foundation's board president. The motive shifts from simple blackmail to protecting the foundation's reputation and its funds. The climax occurs when Jeff and Zee confront Payton Bartel, the foundation's executive director. Payton, desperate to save her mother's legacy from the scandal of Thomas's embezzlement and secret family, admits to killing Ray after he threatened to expose the truth. She kidnaps Zee at gunpoint on a boat, leading to a tense confrontation where Jeff manages to disarm Payton and rescue Zee. The film ends with Jeff deciding to stay on the island and continue helping the Chief, while his relationship with Zee begins to rekindle over a fishing trip.
