About the series
Jeff Jackson arrives on Martha's Vineyard after leaving police work, but a body interrupts his attempt to settle into retirement. Local doctor Zee Madieras becomes his partner in the investigations. The distinction from the shop-owner mysteries is useful: Jeff already knows the job, and the question is how much of his former life he can leave behind. The island supplies the new community, while his connection with Zee carries between cases.
What to expect
These are investigations by an experienced former detective rather than a civilian learning on the job. Zee contributes medical expertise and local connections. Stolen jewellery and an art gallery broaden the island cases, but Jeff's attempt to find a quieter life remains a reason to follow the series in order.

Inside the series
Retirement is the premise
The first film explicitly begins with Jeff's early retirement. His investigation experience predates the series.

Zee's medical role distinguishes this partnership from the professional-detective and shop-owner pairings elsewhere in Hallmark mysteries.
Read the sourceA few more answers
Is Jeff still a police detective?
He begins the series as a retired Boston detective. His previous experience drives his involvement in the island cases.
Can I watch the art-gallery film first?
Its case has its own suspects, but A Beautiful Place to Die gives the clearest introduction to Jeff and Zee.
