    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The biological father faked his death specifically because he went blind and felt he couldn't be a dad.
    • The stepfather essentially blackmailed a blind man into staying 'dead' for two decades.
    • A secondary character is referred to as 'The Love Doctor' despite being a socially awkward lab technician.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Sophie McClaren, a specialist in forensic genealogy, successfully reuniting a client with long-lost family. Her personal life takes a somber turn when her close friend Jonathan reveals his leukemia has returned and he will eventually need a bone marrow transplant. While Jonathan's brother Jackson, an ER doctor, returns from Manhattan to help, their mother Dorothy approaches Sophie with a shocking request: find their biological father, Clark Higgins. Clark was declared dead years ago after his car went off a bridge, but Dorothy reveals she received a postcard years later and a friend claimed to have seen him in Boston. Sophie agrees to the case on the condition that Dorothy tells her sons the truth. Jonathan is initially furious, feeling abandoned by a man he believed was dead, while Jackson joins Sophie in the investigation. Sophie and Jackson track down Clark’s old friend, Bill Reynolds, who reveals that Clark was overwhelmed by the impending birth of twins and the burden of caring for his troubled sister, Jessie. A key lead comes from a witness who saw Clark in Boston with a red-haired woman. Sophie eventually realizes that the woman was Jessie, and that Clark didn't leave for another lover—he was being cared for by his sister because he had been blinded in the car accident. The investigation hits a snag when they discover that George, the boys' stepfather, actually met Clark years ago and threatened to have him prosecuted for faking his death if he didn't stay away. George admits this was born out of a desperate fear of losing his new family. Using DNA databases and tracking Jessie’s married name, Sophie finds the siblings in Massachusetts. Clark is brought back to Buffalo for a tearful reunion with Dorothy and his sons. He explains that he felt his blindness made him a burden and he wanted the boys to have a 'fresh start' with a capable father like George. In the climax, it is revealed that Clark is a perfect bone marrow match for Jonathan. The surgery is a success, and the family begins to heal. Parallel to the main plot, Sophie’s assistant Esme solves her first solo case involving hidden love letters, and Sophie finally finds the courage to open a package left by her own birth mother, which contains a blanket from the night she was left at a firehouse. The film concludes with Sophie and Jackson acknowledging their long-standing romantic feelings, which had been stalled since a near-miss kiss years earlier.
