    How unusual is it?

    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist's mother suddenly decides to become a 'Nana' and makes pancakes as a major character arc
    • A middle school class president election is given nearly as much screen time and gravitas as a first-degree murder trial
    • The 'tea and cream' analogy used to solve a high-stakes sniper assassination
    • The concept of a 'nascent' relationship being put on 'pause' via a formal legal sidebar

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Joanna Darrow attempting to embrace domestic life by making pancakes for her daughter Claire and granddaughter Lou, signaling her decision to stay in town rather than return to the high-stakes legal world of New York. This domestic peace is interrupted when Cassie Piper, the lawyer responsible for Joanna's past professional ruin, arrives seeking help. Cassie claims she is being framed for insider trading by their former firm, Herrimann, Corrigan, and Herrimann, and has lost custody of her daughter. Despite the bitter history, Claire and Joanna agree to take the case. Brian Herrimann, the firm's senior partner, arrives in town and attempts to bribe Joanna with a partnership to drop Cassie's defense, which she flatly refuses. Moments later, a sniper attack occurs outside the house Herrimann is renting; Herrimann is wounded, but his paralegal, Jason Morrison, is killed. Cassie is seen fleeing the scene in her signature gray Chevelle, making her the prime suspect. ADA Miles Strasberg is assigned to prosecute, leading him and Claire to agree to put their 'nascent' relationship on hold to maintain professional ethics. As the trial approaches, Claire investigates other suspects, including disgruntled clients Hugh and Marjorie Williams and the homeowner Gail Reed, all of whom have motives to hate Herrimann. However, the discovery of encrypted files on the victim's computer reveals that Jason Morrison was actually whistleblowing against Herrimann for money laundering and fraud. Claire experiences a breakthrough when she realizes the shell casings found in Cassie's car were planted before the shooting even occurred. She discovers that Herrimann's assistant, Tammy, purchased a duplicate Chevelle to frame Cassie. In a climactic courtroom scene, Claire uses a tea-pouring analogy to explain that the evidence was planted in the wrong chronological order. She proves that Herrimann hired Tammy's brother, a former convict named Sebastian, to kill Jason to silence him, then attempted to kill Sebastian to cover his tracks. The film concludes with Herrimann's arrest, Cassie's exoneration and reunion with her daughter, and Claire and Miles finally 'pressing play' on their relationship.
