Rebecca Granway is a dedicated history professor and widowed mother of two boys, Noah and Ollie. While preparing for a family vacation to Mustang Point Ridge to celebrate her upcoming tenure decision, she discovers her teenage son Noah has secretly invited his girlfriend, Jasmine. Upon arriving at the ranch, Rebecca meets her sister Cassidy and mother Maureen. Cassidy reveals she is there to reconnect with a man she met in New York. During a trip to town, Rebecca visits a hat shop where a man named Jake helps her select three hats based on her personality, describing one as 'Tough and Tender.' They share a long coffee date where Rebecca opens up about the sudden death of her husband, Shawn, three years prior. However, when they return to the ranch, Cassidy introduces her 'new squeeze'—who turns out to be Jake. Jake is a champion rodeo rider and 'horse whisperer' hired to help the ranch owner, Aaron. Cassidy, unaware of Rebecca's meeting with Jake, asks her sister to spend the day with him to 'vet' his character. Rebecca reluctantly agrees, leading to a riding lesson where she initially pretends to be a novice despite being an experienced rider. She and Jake bond deeply, but Rebecca remains conflicted due to her sister's interest. Meanwhile, Ollie spends his time 'ghost hunting' on the ranch, using a 'ghost call' taught to him by Jake, secretly hoping to see the spirit of his late father. Noah and Jasmine struggle with their future, eventually deciding to apply to the same college, which forces Rebecca to realize she needs to stop controlling her children's lives. At a local rodeo and dance, Rebecca tries to move on by going on a date with an old high school admirer, Bobby Briggs, but the chemistry is non-existent. After a romantic dance with Jake, Rebecca flees, overwhelmed by guilt and grief. Jake eventually breaks up with Cassidy, admitting his feelings for someone else. When Cassidy discovers the truth about Rebecca and Jake's initial meeting, she is hurt by the lack of honesty but eventually encourages her sister to pursue happiness. The film reaches its climax when Ollie goes missing while ghost hunting alone. Jake finds him near an old miner's cabin, where Ollie tearfully admits he just wanted to see his dad again. Rebecca uses the moment to help her sons process their grief, telling them that their father lives on through their own spirits. In the end, Rebecca receives tenure but realizes her life in Boulder feels empty without Jake. She confesses her love to him, and Jake reveals he has accepted a horse therapy job in Boulder so they can be together. The film concludes with the family united and Cassidy finding a new spark with Bobby.
