    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist is named Caretta after the scientific name for loggerhead turtles.
    • The love interest flirts by comparing the protagonist's eyes to the color of different types of shrimp.
    • The film features a somber ending where the mother dies, which is atypical for the standard Hallmark formula.
    • The 'Turtle Lady' subculture involves illegal egg relocation during a hurricane.

Why we’d put this one on

This one reaches for something heavier than the usual Hallmark beat. Minka Kelly plays Cara, who loses her job and returns to the family beach house in South Carolina, where her mother Lovie, played by Andie MacDowell, now spends her days protecting loggerhead turtle nests. Chad Michael Murray is the old flame waiting in the wings. The turtle obsession runs deep: Cara is actually named after the scientific name for loggerheads, and Murray flirts by comparing her eyes to different types of shrimp. At a 6.5, with a real cast and a genuinely emotional family story about coming home, it is a summer watch with weight. Grab tissues.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Cara Rudland being fired from her advertising job in Chicago, only to discover her colleague and boyfriend Richard has taken over her accounts. She retreats to her childhood home, Primrose Cottage, on a South Carolina island. Upon arrival, she is surprised to find her mother, Lovie, has taken in Toy, a 20-year-old pregnant woman with no family. Cara also reconnects with Brett, an ex-boyfriend who runs the local marina. The family dynamic is strained, particularly with Cara's brother Palmer, who manages Lovie's finances and views the beach house as a run-down liability he wishes to sell for condo development. Lovie is deeply committed to the conservation of loggerhead turtles, a passion Cara initially finds eccentric. As the summer progresses, Cara and Brett begin to rekindle their romance, though Cara remains guarded about her career failure and her fear of ending up in an unhappy marriage like her parents. The story takes a somber turn when Lovie reveals to Cara that she has terminal cancer and has chosen to forego treatment to enjoy her last summer in peace. This revelation forces Cara to confront her past resentments toward her mother's perceived passivity. During a major hurricane, the family is forced to huddle together in the cottage. Lovie shares the story of her true soulmate, Russell Bennett, who died in a plane crash years ago, revealing that the beach land was a gift from him to protect the turtles. In the aftermath of the storm, Toy gives birth, and Palmer finally reconciles with his mother and sister. Lovie passes away peacefully at the end of the summer. Despite a lucrative job offer to return to Chicago, Cara decides to stay at the beach house, taking over her mother's legacy as a turtle protector and committing to a life with Brett.
