    Full story (spoilers)
Jess Barro is a skilled lead technician at her father Ray's garage, Barro's Auto Repair, in Detroit. While she is brilliant under the hood, she suffers from stage fright and avoids the spotlight. Her world is upended when her father reveals their landlord is demanding a massive rent prepayment they cannot afford. Simultaneously, she encounters her ex-boyfriend Luke Childs, who has traded his coveralls for a suit as the VP of Strategy at his father Steven's corporate auto chain, Tune Up Wiz. Their history is bitter; years ago, Steven cut Ray out of a partnership, and Jess believes Luke knew about the betrayal and said nothing. To save the shop, Jess reluctantly joins 'American High Gear,' a televised car restoration competition hosted by Wayne LaRoche. She is blindsided to find Luke is also a contestant. The competition begins with high tension as Luke assigns Jess a beat-up 1966 Thunderbird to restore, knowing she is the only one capable of the task. Throughout various challengesβ€”including a high-speed sanding round and a technical trivia segmentβ€”Jess struggles with her nerves while Luke tries to bridge the gap between them. During a team challenge, they are forced to work together on the Thunderbird, rediscovering their old rhythm and professional chemistry. Outside the competition, Steven Childs attempts to buy Ray's garage, but Ray refuses. Steven then secretly secures a backup lease on the Barro property, planning to take over the space if Ray defaults. Luke discovers this and tries to persuade his father to help the Barros instead of crushing them, but Steven remains focused on acquisition. Meanwhile, Jess and Luke share a nostalgic night of roller skating and a visit to their old high school, where Luke finally apologizes for his past lack of courage. In the final round, contestants must perform a custom paint job. While Luke is distracted by his father's aggressive business moves, he accidentally knocks over a compressor, spraying unintended paint onto Jess's car. Jess, having just learned of Steven's plan to take over her father's lease, assumes the 'accident' was deliberate sabotage to ensure she loses. Heartbroken, she confronts Luke. To prove his integrity, Luke resigns from his father's company and Steven eventually realizes the damage he has caused, apologizing to both Ray and Jess. Jess manages to fix her car just in time for the reveal. She wins the competition, saving the garage. The film concludes with Jess and Luke hosting their own show, 'Community Garage,' where they restore cars for charity, fully reconciled as partners in both life and work.
