    The premise

Ten years ago, Faye and Lydia each opened their own bakeries in Emeryville, Ohio after a personal and professional fall-out during a local Pumpkin Pie contest. Now their children--and co-workers--Casey and Sam, are set to carry on the rivalry as they go head-to-head in the same contest. There's only one problem for these two people who are supposed to hate each other: they start to fall in love.

    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The intensity of the 'war' over pumpkin pie is treated with the gravity of a high-stakes political thriller.
    • The fathers having a secret 10-year golf friendship while their wives are 'at war' is a bizarrely long-running deception.
    • The use of a handwriting sample as a 'gotcha' moment in a public baking competition.

Why we’d put this one on

Ten years after their mothers' friendship blew up over a pie contest, Casey (Julie Gonzalo) and Sam are dragged into carrying on the feud at the annual Lake Shore County Pumpkin Pie bake-off, despite the small problem that they are falling for each other. The fun is the tone: the "war" over pumpkin pie gets treated with the gravity of a high-stakes political thriller, complete with a handwriting sample deployed as a public gotcha. At weirdness 3 it is sweet and easygoing, a fall-set enemies-to-lovers with bakery warmth. Reliable comfort viewing for anyone who thinks competitive baking is a perfectly good reason for a decade-long grudge.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a flashback to the Lake Shore County Pumpkin Pie bake-off, where lifelong friends Faye McArthy and Lydia Harper have a public falling out. Lydia reveals she is opening her own bakery, Fuller Street, without Faye, leading to a decade-long 'war' between their rival shops. In the present day, Faye runs 'The Sweet Factory' with her daughter Casey, a Wharton graduate who handles the books but lacks any culinary skill. When Faye breaks her ankle and is ordered to stay off her feet for six weeks, Casey is forced to enter the bake-off to save the business's reputation. Simultaneously, Lydia passes the torch to her son Sam, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef who dreams of expanding the bakery into a full-service restaurant. Sam and Casey meet at the registration table and engage in competitive banter, but they soon realize they can help each other. Sam agrees to teach Casey how to bake in exchange for her help developing a professional business plan to convince his mother to expand. As they spend late nights together in the kitchen, they fall in love, though they must keep their relationship a secret from their feuding mothers. They discover that their fathers, Reggie and Max, have also been keeping a secret: they have been 'golf buddies' for ten years, sneaking away to play together despite the family war. The conflict escalates when Betty, a perennial loser in the contest, spies on Sam and Casey, steals their unique recipe ideas (Casey's bourbon whipped cream and Sam's ginger snap crust), and exposes their alliance to Faye and Lydia. The mothers are initially furious, but the crisis forces them to finally talk. Lydia apologizes for her past actions, admitting she was insecure about Faye's superior talent. The families reconcile and decide to defeat Betty together. In the final round, Sam and Casey compete as a team, presenting a Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie with pecan caramel topping. They publicly expose Betty for stealing their original recipe by proving the handwriting on her tablet belongs to Casey. Sam and Casey are crowned champions and celebrate with a public kiss. The film ends with the families successfully running a joint restaurant-bakery venture, with Faye and Lydia finally back to being best friends.
