The film opens at a chaotic Portland airport where a winter storm has grounded all flights to Denver. Maya, an upbeat influencer, documents the frustration while Clay, a cynical data analyst, clashes with Dana, an adventure writer, over a complicated coffee order Clay dubs a 'Chad-uccino.' When flights are officially canceled, Dana proposes that a group of strangers share a rental van to drive the 18-hour journey. The group includes Dana, Clay, Maya, a grumpy older man named Dusty, a mother-son duo (Tricia and Ben), a couple from Hong Kong (Lai Ling and Baba), and a struggling bartender named Ember. As they begin the drive, Clay attempts to manage the trip with rigid data-driven schedules, while Dana pushes for spontaneity. Tricia suffers a panic attack, leading to a group 'hug, help, or heard' moment that Maya films for her followers, branding the group the '#VanClan.' The journey hits a snag when the interstate closes, forcing them onto backroads using paper maps. During a karaoke session in the van, Ember reveals a stunning singing voice but breaks down, later explaining she is fighting for visitation rights to see her daughter. The group becomes a viral sensation on TikTok, leading to fans recognizing them at a diner. Clay reveals his cynicism stems from a public, failed Christmas proposal, while Dana reveals she has a heart condition that drives her 'live every day like it's your last' philosophy. After getting lost on an unnamed road and breaking the van's control arm, they get stranded in Greenfield, a town obsessed with the 'Elf Games.' In Greenfield, the group competes in festive challenges to pass the time while waiting for a replacement part. Maya uses her influencer status to get a fan to deliver the part, but the fan attempts to extort them for $2,000, leading to a social media backlash against Maya. The group rallies around her, and Tricia finally admits her anxiety stems from fear that Ben's birth mother will replace her. They eventually reach Denver on Christmas morning. Dusty reveals he lost his daughter years ago and helps Ember secure a place to live so she can be with her child. Clay realizes he wants to 'jump' into a relationship with Dana, eventually finding her at a ski resort to confess his feelings. The movie ends with the 'VanClan' reuniting at a Christmas party, having transformed from strangers into a family.
