    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Lena and her 18-year-old son Marcus, who is on the autism spectrum, preparing for Christmas. Lena is highly protective and maintains a strict routine for Marcus, while her daughter Maya, a talented pianist, quietly sacrifices her own opportunities, such as a holiday recital, to support the family's needs. The family travels to Orchardsville to visit Hope Hills Academy, a residential program that Rick, Lena's ex-husband, believes will help Marcus gain independence. Upon arrival, they are met with a surprise: the program requires a 'parent-free' assessment weekend where Marcus must stay on-site without contact with his family. Lena is immediately resistant, haunted by a past trauma where Marcus was bullied and nearly drowned at a neighborhood pool, leading her to believe the world is too dangerous for him. Rick, however, insists that Marcus needs a 'nudge' to grow. While Marcus is at the academy, the rest of the family stays at a guest house run by Beth and her son Henry. Maya forms a bond with Henry and eventually confesses to Lena that she often feels overlooked because Marcus's needs always come first. This leads to a breakthrough between mother and daughter, with Lena promising to be more present for Maya. Meanwhile, Rick and Lena spend time together, rediscovering their chemistry and addressing the reasons for their divorce; Rick admits he has ended his relationship with his girlfriend and wants to be a more present father. A minor crisis occurs when Marcus scrapes his knee, but the incident actually proves to Lena that Marcus is capable of handling small setbacks without her. The climax occurs during the Hope Hills Christmas play, where Marcus performs as 'Blitzen' and thrives in the social environment. Seeing Marcus's joy and his desire to stay at the school, Lena finally realizes that her protection was becoming a limitation. The film concludes with Rick suggesting he take a job in Orchardsville so the family can live nearby while Marcus attends the academy, and the family celebrates Christmas together, finally united and hopeful for Marcus's independent future.
