    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist mother accidentally catfishes her own son on a dating app
    • The Classifie app is used for highly specific things like shaming local shoplifters and finding foot photos
    • The Gen Z employee Hannah is portrayed as a 'digital native' who can multitask social media and potting plants simultaneously
    • A cardiologist uses a local classifieds app to find a date rather than a professional or standard dating app

Why we’d put this one on

A warmer, more grown-up Hallmark than usual, and worth a look for that alone. Melora Hardin plays a famous romance novelist who returns home after five years away to reconnect with her adult kids, who are sorting out their own love lives via a hyper-local app called Classifie. Katherine McNamara co-stars, and the film gives real space to a queer romance among the leads. The app is gloriously specific: people use it to shame local shoplifters and, somehow, to find foot photos. At weirdness 5 it is mostly heartfelt, occasionally absurd, and a nice change of pace if you want a spring-set family story over another snowstorm.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with best-selling romance author Emilia Bloom arriving in her hometown of Pennfield, narrating her philosophy that real love stories are messy and subvert expectations. She has been estranged from her children, Taylor and Zach, since her husband Andy died five years ago. Taylor runs 'The Bloomeria,' a plant shop, with her Gen Z assistant Hannah, while Zach is an artist struggling to design a mural for 'Between Two Covers,' a bookstore managed by Margot. Hannah introduces Taylor to 'Classifie,' a local app used for everything from dating to community bulletins. Emilia also joins the app under the pseudonym 'Ready to Bloom' for 'research,' which leads to an awkward inciting incident where she accidentally 'catfishes' her own son, Zach, when they both show up for a blind date at a hotel bar. This forced reunion reveals Emilia's presence in town, but Taylor remains deeply hostile, feeling abandoned by her mother's flight after their father's death. Taylor eventually matches on the app with 'rooting4u,' who turns out to be Franki, a female cardiologist. Taylor, who has never dated a woman before, is surprised but intrigued, and the two begin a tentative romance involving coffee dates and hiking. Meanwhile, Zach and Margot bond over a shared love of bowling and the mural project. A major subplot involves Emilia's secret: she recently suffered a heart attack and came home specifically to seek treatment from a specialist (who happens to be Franki) and to reconcile with her family before it was too late. The conflict peaks when Emilia suffers a panic attack and is hospitalized; Taylor discovers the truth about her mother's health and realizes that Franki is her mother's doctor. Feeling overwhelmed by the overlap of her personal life and her mother's drama, Taylor briefly pushes Franki away. The climax occurs at Emilia's public book reading at the bookstore. Instead of reading from her latest novel, Emilia gives a vulnerable speech apologizing for 'fleeing' her family's grief and publicly praises Taylor's business and Zach's artistic talent. She also encourages Taylor to reconcile with Franki. The film resolves with Taylor and Franki reuniting, Zach and Margot starting a relationship, and Emilia deciding to stay in Pennfield to write a new, more authentic book about complicated, real-world love. The story ends with a family dinner where Emilia's editor arrives, hinting at new beginnings for everyone.
