    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The plot centers on a girl accidentally becoming pen pals with a dead girl's grieving mother via a two-year-old popped balloon.
    • The extreme coincidence of the love interest's ex-husband being the person who hires the protagonist for a job in a different city.
    • The town's obsessive commitment to Shakespeare, including themed food like 'The Hamlet Omelet'.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a flashback of Noelle Webb and her daughter Antonia (Toni) at a wishing well. Toni wishes for a best friend and releases a cupcake-shaped weather balloon with a note attached. Two years later, Jack McCabe and his 13-year-old daughter Grace move to Ashland. Grace, who lost her mother years prior, is struggling to adjust to the new school and her father's protective nature. While playing basketball, Grace discovers the remains of Toni's balloon in a tree. She finds the note and, seeking a friend herself, writes to the address provided. Noelle, now a Shakespeare professor, receives the letter and is stunned to see her deceased daughter's balloon has been found. She begins responding to Grace via email, though she omits the fact that Toni passed away shortly after the balloon was released. Parallel to this, Jack and Noelle have several 'meet-cute' encounters in town, including a near-collision in their cars and a meeting at a local shop. They begin a flirtatious relationship, unaware of the connection between Grace and Noelle's emails. Jack's neighbor Audrey attempts to pursue him, but he realizes he isn't interested, eventually 'breaking up' with her after Grace points out he is leading her on. Meanwhile, Grace struggles in science class and is paired with a difficult lab partner, Liv, but finds a friend in a boy named Owen at a local bookstore cafe. The truth comes out when Grace visits Noelle's house to meet 'Toni' in person. Jack arrives to pick her up and is shocked to find Noelle there. Noelle finally explains the tragic truth: Toni died two years ago. Grace is initially confused but bonds with Noelle over their mutual experiences with grief. Noelle invites Grace to help her pack up Toni's room, a task she hasn't been able to face alone. Jack and Noelle's romance deepens over a 'goulash night' dinner, but a conflict arises when Jack's construction project loses funding. He is forced to accept a job in Portland, which would mean moving Grace yet again just as she has finally made the basketball team and found a community. In a final twist of fate, Jack discovers that his new boss in Portland is actually Brian, Noelle's ex-husband. After Jack and Noelle spend a weekend at Noelle's mountain cabin—where they celebrate Toni's memory rather than mourning her—Brian and Noelle decide to collaborate. Using the funding from the Portland project, they break ground on the 'Antonia Webb Center for Pediatric Research' in Ashland, allowing Jack to keep his job locally. The film concludes with the community releasing new biodegradable balloons in memory of Toni and Grace's mother, as Jack and Noelle commit to their new life together.
