    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Shannon Hughes, a skilled home restoration expert, beginning work on the 'Craddock House' for its new owner, thriller novelist Mac Sullivan. During the initial demolition, a stuck dumbwaiter is dislodged and crashes into the basement, spilling out a human skeleton. The remains are identified via dental records and a medical alert bracelet as Lily Brogans, a talented high school student who vanished 20 years ago. The discovery hits close to home for Shannon, as Lily was the sister of her construction foreman, Sean Brogans. Sean immediately accuses Cliff Hogarth, Lily's former boyfriend and Shannon's professional rival, leading to a public fight and Sean's arrest. Shannon and Mac begin their own investigation, noticing that the dumbwaiter was intentionally blocked with a piece of wood and that a banister in the house had been sloppily repaired with adhesive, suggesting Lily fell or was pushed. They find one of Lily's old diaries hidden in the house, which reveals she had a secret relationship with the current athletic director, Brad Jones, and was angry with her best friend Denise. As Shannon and Mac dig deeper, an unknown assailant attempts to burn down the Craddock House by rigging an electrical heater and turpentine, nearly killing Shannon. The investigation shifts toward the high school when Shannon discovers that Brad Jones has been providing test answers to star athletes to maintain the school's winning streak—a practice that began when he was a student. Cliff Hogarth, who knew the truth, is found murdered in his office shortly after threatening to go to the police. While the authorities suspect Brad, Shannon realizes that the 'black car' seen at the original crime scene matches a vehicle owned by Principal Darren Dean in the 1990s. In the climax, Shannon confronts Principal Dean at the Craddock House. Dean confesses that 20 years ago, he accidentally caused Lily to fall during an argument about the cheating scandal and hid her body to protect the school's prestige. He admits to killing Cliff to keep the secret buried and attempts to kill Shannon by setting the house on fire. Mac and the police arrive just in time to apprehend Dean. The film concludes with Shannon finding Lily's final diary and returning it to Sean, while she and Mac share a romantic moment, agreeing to continue their partnership in both restoration and amateur sleuthing.
