Fixer Upper Mysteries

3 movies

Fixer Upper Mysteries asks a simple question: what if your home-renovation contractor also solved the murders she kept stumbling into? The contractor is Shannon Hughes, played by the singer Jewel, and yes, that takes a scene or two to get used to. She runs a restoration business in the coastal town of Lighthouse Cove, and she keeps finding corpses in the old houses she's hired to fix up. Colin Ferguson plays Mac Sullivan, the investigative reporter and crime novelist who rents from her, partners up on the cases, and becomes the slow-burn romance. Erin Karpluk plays her friend Jennifer and Ron Lea plays her father Pete throughout.

There are three films, all from 2017 and 2018, and the formula is reliably cozy: an old house, a fresh body, a contractor who reads a crime scene the way she'd read a load-bearing wall. The cases stay gentle, the small-town texture is the real draw, and the ratings sit in a tight band around 6.7. If you like a murder with a paint swatch in the frame, this series knows exactly what it is.

Fixer Upper Mysteries movies in order

Each film is a self-contained case, so any order works. Release order is the nicer way to do it, because Shannon and Mac's romance builds a little more each time.

  1. 1
Framed for Murder: A Fixer Upper Mystery

Framed for Murder: A Fixer Upper Mystery(2017)

The 2017 opener. Reporter Mac Sullivan buys a Lighthouse Cove mansion and hires Shannon to restore it, and almost immediately she finds a friend's uncle dead in what the police shrug off as an accident. Shannon trusts her gut instead. Jewel and Colin Ferguson set up the contractor-and-reporter team here, and there's a hidden-treasure angle that keeps the stakes higher than the cozy tone suggests. Rated 6.6.

  2. 2
Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery

Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery(2017)

The 2017 follow-up, and the moodiest of the three. While renovating a historic mansion for Mac, Shannon makes a grim discovery behind the walls that cracks open a decades-old cold case, the kind of small-town secret somebody clearly wanted left buried. This is the one that leans furthest into proper mystery rather than light caper, and it's better for it. Rated 6.7.

  3. 3
Deadly Deed: A Fixer Upper Mystery

Deadly Deed: A Fixer Upper Mystery(2018)

The 2018 finale, and the most personal entry. Shannon takes on a charity job turning a donated Victorian into low-income housing, then finds the banker who fought the project dead on the site. With a hard deadline closing in and her own friends under suspicion, she and Mac race the case while their romance finally stops simmering. Rated 6.7.
