Full story (spoilers)
Ava Jensen is a talented architect in Minnesota with a passion for sustainable housing. Her Uncle Karl, a renowned designer of ice structures, invites her to the fictional kingdom of Fríorland to help complete the 'Winter Castle,' a secret annual ice palace tradition for the royal family. Upon arrival, Ava is warned by Brigitta, the Director of Operations, to maintain the highest level of decorum, especially regarding Prince Henry. Henry is currently under intense pressure from his parents and the press to find a suitable date for the Royal Christmas Ball following a breakup with Lady Astrid. Brigitta and the Queen hope Henry will choose Sigrid, Brigitta's daughter, who has recently returned from the Sorbonne.
Ava and Henry meet in the castle's atrium, where they immediately spark a connection. Ava convinces the 'tightly wound' Prince to let loose by going down an ice slide she designed. To keep Ava away from the Prince, Brigitta assigns her a grueling last-minute task: building five individual 'pooch palaces' for the royal dogs. However, Henry intervenes, revealing the dogs aren't coming and clearing Ava's schedule for a private 'adventure.' They travel to a remote fishing chalet where they bond over Ava's sketches for disaster-relief housing and witness the Northern Lights. During this time, Henry finds the inspiration he needs for his upcoming annual address to the nation.
A tabloid photographer captures the couple together, and Deputy Von Trier uncovers a scandal from Ava's past: her former fiancé was a white-collar criminal. Though Ava was exonerated of any wrongdoing, Brigitta uses the information to pressure Ava into leaving the country to protect the Prince's reputation. Ava departs for the airport, but Henry, realizing his feelings, attempts to stop her. In a classic romantic twist, Ava's plane turns around mid-flight because she realizes she made a mistake. She returns to the palace and attends the Royal Christmas Ball with the help of a reformed Von Trier and Brigitta. The film concludes with Henry delivering a moving speech about compassion and announcing 'Polar Green,' a sustainable housing project he wants Ava to lead, allowing her to relocate to Fríorland to be with him.
