    Full story (spoilers)
Johnny Payne is dumped by his girlfriend at the same moment his loud, working-class life at Steve’s Bar is interrupted by Prudence Thorpe, who has come from Glasswick Castle to deliver astonishing news: Johnny is the son of William, Duke of Glasswick, and the next in line to inherit the title. Johnny refuses to take the summons seriously, furious that a father who abandoned him and his mother would suddenly want a relationship now, but his mother Dottie urges him to go and at least see the man face to face. Arriving at Glasswick Castle in England, Johnny is immediately out of place among the rigid etiquette, endless wardrobe changes, and ancient protocol. He meets his father, the Duke, and rejects the idea that he has come for money or status, demanding answers about the years of silence. The Duke, burdened by debt and duty, initially assumes Johnny is after the inheritance, while Prudence tries to keep the chaotic situation under control. The castle itself is financially shaky, the estate is under strain, and the upcoming Glasswick Ball looms over everyone as both a tradition and a deadline. As Johnny is forced to stay and prove he can handle the role, he clashes constantly with his titled cousin Alistair Covington-Breed, who is polished, smug, and certain the dukedom should be his. Yet Johnny also begins to connect with the estate’s staff and villagers, especially when he helps troubleshoot the Duke’s beloved old car and starts exploring ways to turn surplus farm produce into something useful. Prudence, who first seems all business, becomes the one person who sees past Johnny’s rough edges and encourages him to consider his place there. Their banter and honesty steadily deepen into attraction as she helps him navigate the world of nobility and he helps her rediscover the lighter, more genuine version of herself. The turning point comes when Johnny starts to imagine a future for Glasswick that includes the village rather than shutting it out. He invites local friends and farmers to the ball and supports a beet-and-apple juice venture that could help make the estate profitable again. But just as he begins to embrace the idea of belonging, Alistair exposes a devastating legal issue: Johnny was born after his parents’ marriage was annulled, meaning his claim to the title is supposedly invalid. Feeling betrayed and out of place again, Johnny decides to leave, insisting that people do not change and that he does not belong in the castle or in this family. Prudence challenges that belief, and the emotional truth of the story emerges: the Duke and Dottie were still in love, but the annulment papers were forged, most likely by the Duke’s father. At the Glasswick Ball, the Duke publicly admits his mistakes, confesses that he never stopped loving Dottie, and announces that Johnny is the heir he wants to succeed him. With Prudence’s evidence, the forgery is revealed and Alistair’s claim collapses. Johnny’s mother reunites with the Duke, the castle’s future shifts toward the village, and the family begins to heal. In the end, Johnny chooses neither to flee nor to become a caricature of nobility; he becomes a new kind of Duke, one who values people over pedigree. He and Prudence share a clear emotional connection built on mutual respect and honesty, and Johnny commits to helping make Glasswick self-sustaining through the juice business and a more open relationship with the community. By the final scenes, he is no longer the reluctant royal but a man ready to carry both his old life and his new one into the future.
