    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The town is a literal pocket dimension from a children's book
    • Residents are assigned archetypal roles like 'The Witch' and 'The Fool' to provide therapy to tourists
    • A magical chime sounds whenever someone 'heals' or receives the book
    • The 'Witch' character is allowed to be verbally abusive to guests as part of the 'process'
    • A character decides to abandon the real world to live in a fairy tale forever

Why we’d put this one on

The only perfect 10 on our weirdness scale in this batch, and it earns it. Brooke D'Orsay and Ryan Paevey play childhood friends who get mysteriously pulled into Wunderbrook, a village that seems to exist only inside a fairy tale book they loved as kids. The setup is wild: the town is a literal pocket dimension, residents are assigned archetypal roles like "The Witch" and "The Fool" to provide therapy to visitors, and a magical chime sounds whenever someone heals. It is part Christmas romance, part group-therapy fantasy, and fully committed to its own strange logic. Start here if you want proof of how far the catalog can wander.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a prologue featuring young Talia and Anderson reading 'A Wunderbrook Christmas Story,' a book about a magical village that only those in need can find. Talia's father encourages her writing dreams before passing away shortly after. Thirty years later, Talia is a bookstore owner in Seattle whose writing career has stalled, and Anderson is a surgeon who has stepped away from his practice after losing a patient on the operating table. After a chance encounter at Talia's shop, both are independently drawn to the 'Gingerbread Inn'—Talia via a mysterious phone call and Anderson via a road detour. They arrive in the village of Wunderbrook, which Talia immediately recognizes as the setting of their childhood book. They are joined by other guests: Diane and Keith, a couple secretly planning to divorce, and Charles, a widower who has lost his joy. The village is populated by residents who mirror the book's characters: Judy (the Fairy Queen), Miles (the King), Izzy (the Princess), Jake (the Fool), and Mildred (the Witch). Throughout 'Wunder Week,' the guests are led through therapeutic holiday activities like blind hot cocoa tastings and communal story hours. Talia becomes obsessed with the 'conspiracy' that the town is magical, while Anderson remains skeptical. Mildred, playing the role of the antagonist, uses harsh truths to provoke the guests into facing their realities. The conflict peaks when Mildred publicly exposes Anderson's medical failure and Talia's professional stagnation. This leads to a breaking point where Anderson prepares to leave, but he is stopped when Charles suffers a medical emergency. Anderson is forced to step back into his role as a doctor, successfully treating Charles and realizing that his patient's previous death was unavoidable. Talia, meanwhile, realizes her fear of loss has kept her from pursuing her dreams. On the 'Night of Wunder,' the residents reveal the truth: Wunderbrook is a real magical entity that intervenes in the lives of those who have 'forgotten how to dream.' Charles decides to stay in the village permanently to find new purpose. Talia and Anderson confess their love for one another. The film concludes one year later; Talia has written a new bestseller about Wunderbrook, which restores the village's waning magic by bringing its story back to the world, and she and Anderson are happily together.
