About the series

Courtney Thorne-Smith plays archaeology professor Emma Fielding, whose research and teaching repeatedly put her near a murder. James Tupper is FBI agent Jim Conner, her investigative counterpart. This is a compact three-film series, moving from a coastal excavation to a castle crypt and an academic gathering. Start with Site Unseen to meet Emma and her students before following the partnership into the later cases. Dana Cameron's novels provide the literary starting point.

What to expect

Emma's workplace matters to the mysteries: digs uncover bodies, historic sites carry local stories, and academic colleagues become suspects. Jim brings the official investigation alongside her specialist knowledge. The three films offer different versions of that partnership without requiring a long franchise catch-up. Their premises involve murder and danger around Emma's students, rather than archaeological adventure alone.

Inside the series

The books have their own order

Dana Cameron's bibliography includes six Emma Fielding novels. The films use the titles Site Unseen, Past Malice and More Bitter Than Death, but the movie sequence is not the full book sequence.

A different kind of expert detective

Emma's expertise gives you digs, crypts and academic rivalries instead of a bakery or antiques shop. Past Malice is the clearest choice if the historic-building setting is what interests you.
