Mystery 101

7 movies

Mystery 101 pairs a brain with a badge and lets the slow-burn do the rest. Jill Wagner plays Amy Winslow, a literature professor who teaches whodunit fiction and keeps tripping over real ones, and Kristoffer Polaha is Detective Travis Burke, the by-the-book cop who learns to trust her hunches. Robin Thomas plays Amy's father Graham, a famous mystery writer, and Preston Vanderslice is the sidekick Bud. Most of it unfolds in the small college town of Garrison, Washington.

There are seven films, made between 2019 and 2021, and they're warm, talky mysteries where the clues come from books, lectures, and campus gossip as often as the crime scene. The Amy-and-Travis chemistry is honestly half the reason to show up. Ratings are strong for the genre, mostly low-to-mid 7s on IMDb, which makes this one of Hallmark's better-liked sleuth runs. Mystery 101 movies in order

Each case is self-contained, but Amy and Travis's relationship builds steadily, so release order gives you the romance in the right sequence. One quirk: the pilot simply titled Mystery 101 sits fourth in our list, so don't be thrown when you reach it.

  1. 1
    Mystery 101: Playing Dead

    Mystery 101: Playing Dead(2019)

From 2019. Amy is helping stage a college play when the lead actress's life is threatened, and she teams with Detective Burke to work out who's lying. A theatrical setting, a tidy whodunit, and the first proper sparks between the two leads. A good place to get a feel for the rhythm of the series. Rated 7.

  2. 2
    Mystery 101: Dead Talk

    Mystery 101: Dead Talk(2019)

Amy heads to Seattle to give a talk on mystery fiction and runs into both her ex and a tech mogul launching a crime-solving AI (acronym: S.L.O.O.T.H.), who promptly turns up dead. The big-city change of scene and a second-chance-romance thread make this a standout, and a key witness is a teenager running a LARP group from a backyard castle. One of my favorites in the set. Rated 7.3.

  3. 3
    Mystery 101: Words Can Kill

    Mystery 101: Words Can Kill(2019)

A college book festival turns deadly and Amy clashes hard with Travis after he arrests someone she's certain is innocent. The wrinkle: her own father Graham is tangled up in it, dragging the case into family territory. A literary-rivalry mystery with real friction between the leads for once. Rated 7.1.

  4. 4
    Mystery 101

    Mystery 101(2019)

Confusingly also just titled Mystery 101, this is the original 2019 pilot that introduces Amy and Travis, and it sits fourth in our list despite coming first. A professor gets pulled into the theft of a research plant and a snarl of campus deaths and disappearances. This is the enemies-to-lovers start of everything, and it has by far the most votes on IMDb. Rated 7.1.

  5. 5
Mystery 101: An Education in Murder

Mystery 101: An Education in Murder(2020)

From 2020, and the darkest of the run. A true-crime writer's research reopens a case that convicted one of Amy's colleagues, giving the pair a second shot at clearing his name. The trail leads to strychnine, academic plagiarism, and a killer hiding in plain sight on campus. Heavier and more serious than the early films, which I like. Rated 7.3.

  6. 6
    Mystery 101: Killer Timing

    Mystery 101: Killer Timing(2021)

The most dangerous case and the highest-rated, from 2021. An escaped serial killer and an attempt on Travis's life force the pair to team up with his FBI ex, and a house explosion turns up a body mummified inside a wall. Real stakes, a personal threat, and a cliffhanger involving Amy's family. If you want the tense one, this is it. Rated 7.4, the series high.

  7. 7
    Mystery 101: Deadly History

    Mystery 101: Deadly History(2021)

The finale, from 2021. Amy and Travis travel to New York after her uncle goes missing, and the early clues point somewhere grim. A family-centered mystery that takes the duo out of Garrison for their last outing, leaning more on heart than horror. A gentle landing for the series. Rated 7.3.
