    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The town believes the local Vietnam vet collects human skulls and does experiments on dead bodies.
    • The plot centers heavily on 1970s soap box racing physics.
    • Aunt Gayle's reliance on a specific parenting book for every interaction with Bobby.
    • The specific 1976 Bicentennial setting which is rare for Hallmark.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Uncle Jeff writing a letter to his nephew, Bobby, following the death of Bobby's parents in an accident. Bobby arrives in Eagle Rock, a town where soap box racing is a major tradition, but he is immediately met with the strict expectations of Jeff, who runs the local hardware store. Jeff warns Bobby to stay away from Jim Klecan, a local recluse rumored to be dangerous. Bobby struggles at school, clashing with a bully named Tommy Billings, and feels stifled by Jeff's refusal to let him build a soap box racer—a project Bobby had planned with his late father. Seeking a way to fulfill his dream, Bobby visits Jim Klecan's junkyard. Jim, a haunted Vietnam veteran, initially rebuffs the boy but eventually agrees to help when he realizes Bobby is the son of his old racing rival. Bobby begins a secret life, telling his aunt and uncle he is at baseball practice while he actually spends his afternoons at Jim's workshop learning the physics of speed and building the 'Graham Special.' Aunt Gayle tries to bridge the gap using parenting books, while Bobby's teacher, Miss Nelson, discovers his secret and encourages him to be honest. The conflict reaches a boiling point when Jeff discovers Bobby's lies and confronts Jim, threatening to call the police. However, after realizing that his resentment toward his brother is unfairly impacting Bobby, Jeff relents and allows the boy to race. On the day of the 1976 Bicentennial Derby, Bobby faces off against Tommy Billings, who is under immense pressure from his own father, Dennis. Despite a mechanical failure in an early heat, Bobby, Jim, and Jeff work together to repair the car. In the final heat, Bobby uses Jim's advice to stay focused only on the finish line, narrowly defeating Tommy to win the championship and a college scholarship, ultimately reconciling his past with his new family.
