The film begins with Dr. Kate Lawrence, a Ph.D. and popular dating blogger, filming a video about 'red flags' in men, specifically targeting high-maintenance coffee orders. She is engaged to Bryan, a medical equipment salesman who seems to fit her 'perfect' criteria. To boost her career and secure a major book deal, her agent Pam organizes a massive, live-streamed engagement party in Kate's hometown. However, during a technical glitch in the broadcast, Bryan abruptly dumps Kate, claiming he cannot handle the public scrutiny of her blog and that they aren't meant to be. Lucas Wright, a local carpenter and childhood friend who recently delivered a desk to Kate, witnesses her humiliation and impulsively steps onto the stage when the feed returns, announcing himself as her fiancé. Pam insists they maintain the ruse for a month to secure the book deal. Kate and Lucas begin a 'fake' courtship, which includes cake tastings, registry scanning, and public appearances, all filmed by a cameraman named Henry. Conflict arises from their differing personalities: Kate is organized and risk-averse, while Lucas is spontaneous and lives in the moment. During a dinner with Lucas's parents, Susan and Roy, the 'no phones' rule forces Kate to engage deeply with Lucas's family, where she learns that Lucas's former fiancée passed away, which shaped his 'live for today' philosophy. Lucas also apologizes for a high school incident where his friends broke a glass hummingbird belonging to Kate's late mother, a moment that had previously defined him as an 'idiot' in Kate's eyes. As the wedding date (June 29th) approaches, the two grow genuinely close. Lucas challenges Kate's clinical view of romance, particularly during a boat trip where he helps her overcome her fear of the water. The tension peaks when Bryan returns, having broken up with his 'other woman' Stephanie, and begs Kate for a second chance, claiming they are the 'perfect' match she always preached about. Kate realizes she no longer wants 'perfect' and rejects him. However, Stephanie retaliates by posting a viral video exposing Kate and Lucas's engagement as a fraud. Kate's career implodes; she loses her book deal and advertisers. In the fallout, Kate pushes Lucas away, claiming their connection was just 'self-deception.' Realizing she was wrong, Kate fires Pam and prepares to tell the truth. Meanwhile, Lucas posts his own heartfelt video confession, admitting he had a crush on Kate since high school and that his feelings were always real. Kate sees the video and finds a gift Lucas left for her: a handcrafted wooden hummingbird to replace her mother's. She rushes to the wedding venue where Lucas is waiting with ranunculus flowers. They confess their love, and Lucas proposes for real. The movie ends with them deciding to get married immediately, embracing the 'leap of faith' Kate once feared.
