Sugar Plum Twist

Natalia Haddad, a retired principal dancer from New York, returns to Richmond, Virginia, to serve as an assistant choreographer for the Richmond Ballet's annual production of 'The Nutcracker.' She is working under the strict, traditionalist director Katarina 'Ms. Kat' Oblonsky. During auditions for the Sugar Plum Fairy, Viviana 'Vivi' Serrano, a local Latin and ballroom instructor with a background in ballet, delivers a passionate performance. However, Ms. Kat rejects her, claiming her Latin dance background makes her form too 'unconventional' for a professional company. Natalia, seeing Vivi's raw talent and emotional connection to dance, reaches out to her. Meanwhile, Natalia meets Mateo Torres, a lighting designer and English teacher who encourages her to find her own voice as a choreographer rather than just following Ms. Kat's rigid rules. As Natalia and Vivi begin working together, they decide to create a 'Sugar Plum Twist'—a fusion of classical ballet and salsa. This collaboration is complicated when Ms. Kat hires a new principal choreographer, Tony Jarvis, effectively passing Natalia over for a promotion. Tensions peak when Ms. Kat catches Natalia and Vivi practicing their fusion piece in the theater after hours; she suspends Natalia for 'disloyalty' and unauthorized use of the space. During her suspension, Natalia reconciles with Mateo and realizes that her passion lies in innovation. Ms. Kat eventually has a change of heart after realizing Natalia's dedication and the limitations of her own traditionalism. She rehires Natalia as the company's new Principal Choreographer. On opening night, after the traditional performance, Natalia introduces a special encore: Vivi performing the 'Sugar Plum Twist' to a Latin-remixed Tchaikovsky score produced by Vivi's brother, Justin. The performance is a massive success, bridging cultural gaps and modernizing the company's image. The film concludes with Natalia and Mateo celebrating their new relationship and the success of their artistic collaboration.
