    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Oliver O'Toole and his team at the Dead Letter Office (DLO) receiving a damaged letter recovered from a mailbox explosion that occurred fifteen years prior. The letter, written by a teenager named Ryan to a girl named Maddie, contains the chilling line: 'I never meant to kill anyone.' This sets the team on a mission to identify the pair, who were rival high school debaters. Through digital research and Shane's investigative skills, they discover that 'Maddie' is Madison Alstrup and 'Ryan' is Ryan Hallett, the current Governor of Colorado. The investigation reveals that fifteen years ago, after a heated argument with Maddie, Ryan drove away in a state of emotional distress and accidentally struck and killed an unidentified homeless man. Though he turned himself in and his juvenile record was expunged, the guilt has defined his life and political career. Meanwhile, a secondary plot involves Norman Dorman receiving a collection of antique valentines from his cousin Serge, who is leaving to join a monastic order of contemplative ice fishing. Among these is a 1835 letter addressed to the postmaster of New Salem, Illinois, signed 'A.R.'—implied to be Ann Rutledge writing to a young Abraham Lincoln. This historical thread mirrors the central theme of lost love and words left unsaid. In the present, Rita Haywith is unexpectedly crowned Miss United States Special Delivery and must fly to Washington D.C., causing a rift with Norman after a televised interview where she claims to be 'free as a bird' to protect their privacy. The climax occurs at a hospital where Madison is revealed to be terminally ill with a heart defect. Oliver and Shane facilitate a meeting between the Governor and Madison, allowing Ryan to finally deliver his confession and apology in person. The film concludes with the resolution of a misunderstanding between Oliver and Shane; Oliver had sent a handmade Valentine invitation that Shane never received because it was misplaced in a box of decorations. They finally share a dance, while Norman and Rita reconcile, acknowledging that their love doesn't need public validation.
